The Horse By Charlotte Parry 7F The modern horse Equus Caballus belongs to the family Equidae. This family does not just include horses, it also includes donkeys and asses. Equidae are placed in the order of Perissodactyla to which tapirs and rhinos descend; and this group descended from the group called the Condylartha. The Condylartha was a group of extinct hoofed mammals.

The Horses History The history of the horse first starts with the Eohippus which was also known as “The Dawn Horse”. This horse was no bigger than a small dog (hence the picture). It had four toes and lived in the forest of North America. Next came the Mesohippus-then the Pilohippus- and then finally the modern Equus.

The Conformation

The Wild Horse The wild horse can be found all over the world: England, America, France…. The wild horse lives in a group and that is called a herd. It spends 20 out of 24 hours grazing. The wild horses foals are born in spring so there is plenty of food and a herd would thrive.

The Domestic Horse The Domestic horse is a horse many people see at a riding stables or a horse auction. It has a different name (Equus ferus caballus) and a different temperament too! We have domesticated horses since around 4000BC.

Endangered Horses! You would find it hard to believe it but some horse breeds are becoming ENDANGERED ! They are hunted for meat, pets, entertainment and much more.

Hot Bloods, Warm Bloods And Cold Bloods! The horse is divided into three groups: Hot Bloods Hot Bloods Warm Bloods Warm BloodsAnd…. Cold Bloods Cold Bloods When a horse a regarded as a Hot Blood it means the horse has speed and endurance; a Cold Blood means the horse is muscular and designed for heavy work. And finally if a horse is regarded as a Warm Blood it is a cross between a Hot and a Cold Blooded horse.

The Sports Horses Are Used In… Horses are used in many sports. The common ones are: Show Jumping Show Jumping Cross-Country Cross-Country Polo Polo Racing RacingAnd… Hunting Hunting

The Colours And Patterns Of A Horse There are many colours and patterns on a horse: Grey Grey Fleabitten Grey Fleabitten Grey Dapple Grey Dapple Grey Bay Bay Black Black Chestnut Chestnut Liver Chestnut Liver Chestnut Sorrel Sorrel Roan Roan Strawberry Roan Strawberry Roan Blue Roan Blue Roan Dun Dun Palomino Palomino Appaloosa Appaloosa Piebald Piebald Skewbald Skewbald Cremello Cremello Brindle Brindle

Whats The Difference From A Pony & A Horse? Lots of people don’t see the difference between a horse and a pony. A pony is no bigger than 14.2 hands (a hand is 4 inches) and a horse is higher than 14.2 hands. Although some breeds for example the Arab start at 14.2 and end at 15 hands.

The Wild & Domestic Horses Diet The wild horse mainly feeds on grass the same as the domestic horse except the domestic horse has human provided food. This food is normally a mix. Here are some: Seed Hay and Hay Seed Hay and Hay Crushed Oats Crushed Oats Bruised Barley Bruised Barley Flaked Maize Flaked Maize Bran Bran Linseed Linseed Soaked Sugar Beet Soaked Sugar Beet Molassed Chop Molassed Chop Horse and Pony Nuts Horse and Pony Nuts Coarse Mix Coarse Mix

Mares, Stallions, Geldings, Fillys, And Colts MARE: A mare is a female horse. STALLION: A stallion is a male horse that can be a sire. GELDINGS: A gelding is a horse that can not be a sire. He is gelded by his owner. FILLYS: A filly is a female foal. COLTS: A colt is a male foal.

Foals Foals are the fun loving baby horses. They have a funny sticky up mane and are VERY lively. Foals are normally born in spring. As soon as they are born they try to stand up. This is for two reasons: 1. The preditor that would hunt them would go for the kill 2. They would need the all important suckle of milk Once they turn one they are counted as a yearling and then over the age of two they are an adult.
