Density Unit 2

What is Density? Density is mass per unit of volume… In other words, it is how much stuff (matter that makes up mass) can fit inside its space (volume)

Which one is more dense? Two pictures of people in a city square… Which square is more dense?

Which one is more dense? Which box is more dense? Which atom is more dense?

What is Density Mathematically? Density = mass/volume OR mass ÷ volume The units for density are… g (grams)/ cm3 OR g ÷ cm3

Let’s Try a Couple… A dime has a mass of 9g and a volume of 3cm3. What is its density? A block of wood has a mass of 3g and a volume of 1cm3. What is its density? D = 9g/3cm3 = 3g/cm3 D = 3g/1cm3 = 3g/cm3

Sinking or Floating… Liquids that don’t mix and have different densities will either sink or float on each other. In other words, they make layers Which liquid has the lowest density?

Density and Layers… Put the density below with the right liquid. Densities: 5 g/cm3 10 g/cm3 2 g/cm3 4 g/cm3

Try it at home…
