Roald Dahl

INFORMATION Roald Dahl was born in Cardiff in 1916 and had Norwegian parents. He was named after a Norwegian Polar explorer called Roald Amundsen, who was the first man to reach the South Pole. He had three sisters called Astri, Alfhild & Else. Roald Dahl is a poet, writer and screen writer.

Childhood Roald didn’t have the nicest childhood. When he was 3 years old his sister, Astri, died from appendicitis and then a few weeks later his father died from pneumonia whilst on a fishing trip in Antarctica.

Even though he didn't have the nicest childhood he still had fun and was a very cheeky boy. Whilst at school he and his 4 friends got caned by the headmaster for putting a dead mouse in the school sweet shop. It was then known as the “Great Mouse Plot of 1924” within school.

Older life. Roald was 6’6” in height as an adult. After the mouse prank at school Roald was sent to boarding school in Weston Super Mare but he didn’t like it. He was very home sick whilst away from home and wrote to his mum every week but never once told her how unhappy he was. After ending school in August 1934 he crossed the Atlantic and hiked through New Foundland , USA. When Roald’s mum died in 1967 he received all her letters she had written to him whilst he was at school which he never received. These were held together by a piece of green tape.

End life! Roald Dahl died on the 23rd November 1990 of a blood disease. His other relatives gave him a Viking funeral and he was buried with some of his favourite things. A snooker cue, some chocolate, pencils and a power saw. His favourites things were....... Music: Beethoven, TV: The News: Smell : Bacon frying: Food: Caviar: Colour: Yellow.

Books! Roalds first published book was in 1943 on the 1st August called “The Gremlins”. His ideas came from all his favourite adventures and memories. For example Charlie & the chocolate factory was from his time at school and thinking of the school sweet shop. Charlie and the chocolate factory was created in 1964. Roald used to dream of inventing a new chocolate bar that would win the praise of Mr Cadbury.

End Roald Dahl is known as one of the greatest storytellers of all time. He won Author of the year from the British book awards in 1990. He will forever be remembered for his funny and entertaining books and his books will no doubt be read by children in years to come.
