Fixtures & Fittings J. Byrne

Escutcheons An escutcheon An escutcheon is a small decorative metal plate used to surround a keyhole cut in timber. Most escutcheons are pinned to the surface, but there are also small unobtrusive recessed versions. 3 J. Byrne 2014

Ball Catch This catch comprises a spring loaded steel ball trapped in a cylindrical brass case that is inserted in the edge of a cupboard door. When the door is closed the ball springs into a recess in a metal striker plate screwed to the carcase. 4 J. Byrne 2014

Door Bolt On a twin door cupboard, one door is often fitted with a pair of neat surface mounted or flush bolts and the other with a lock or catch. 5 J. Byrne 2014

Magnetic Catch Small-encased magnets are screwed to the inside of a carcase side panel or located in a hole drilled in its edge. The magnet attracts a flat metal striker plate fixed to the cupboard door. 6 J. Byrne 2014

Traditional Furniture Handles & Stays 7 J.Byrne 2014

Handles Handles are essentially functional pieces of hardware, but they have always been used as decorative features to enhance the appearance of drawers and cabinets. Select an appropriate size and shape to suit the style and scale of your work piece. Handles are available in a variety of forms and materials Drawer Pull One piece cupped drawer pulls were originally used on military chests. They serve a strong screw fixed handles for cupboards and chests of drawers. 8 J.Byrne 2014

Cabinet Handles The classic cabinet handle is suspended from two pivots one at each end. Drop Handles A single teardrop shaped or decorative finger grip is suspended from the centre of a drop handle. Small Drawers Handles 9 J.Byrne 2014

Ring Pull This is similar to drop handle, but the ring hangs from the top of a backing plate. Flush Handle A pivoted ring or D shaped handle lies flush with the solid brass backing plate, which is recessed into the drawer front and fixed with countersunk woodscrews Handles 10 J.Byrne 2014

Stays Slide Bar Stay A better quality version slides silently on a bar fixed either horizontally or vertically on the inside of the cabinet. 11 J.Byrne 2014

Stays Joint Stays The simplest fall stay is screw fixed at both ends and has a riveted joint approximately halfway along the arm that breaks to allow the stay to fold into the cabinet. 12 J.Byrne 2014

Stays Door Stay A door stay prevents a cupboard boor being ripped off its hinges or opened too far by restricting its swing to a maximum of 90 degrees. A rigid metal arm, screwed to the door, slides through a pivoting nylon fixing attached to the cabinet. 13 J.Byrne 2014

Stays Lift up Door Stay Stays for lift up doors or lids. Locks automatically when the door or lid is raised, and are released for closure by lifting it slightly before allowing it to fall. Friction stays that prevent doors or lids slamming shut are also available. 14 J.Byrne 2014

Stays Quadrant stay: Used on fall leaf units, drinks cabinets & bureaus. Quadrant stay hinge 15 J.Byrne 2014
