AGENDA New Technologies and ProcessesCensus ExplorerCensus Flows MapperTIGER Products

New Technologies and Processes

API (Application Programing Interface)  To improve access to data and encourage innovation, the Census Bureau has begun to provide API access to some data sets. We invite developers to use these APIs, join our Developer Forum, and provide feedback to help us improve your experience. 

New Thinking!

CEDCaP Census Enterprise Data Collection and Processing We are creating one system to handle data collection and processing for the entire agency, called CEDCaP, or Census Enterprise Data Collection and Processing. CEDCaP will reduce redundancies in data collection and processing, saving millions of taxpayer dollars.

Erran F. Persley CEDSCI Center for Enterprise Dissemination Services and Consumer Innovation

What is CEDSCI? GOAL: Establishing an enterprise-wide approach to how the Census Bureau develops innovative data dissemination tools and capabilities GOAL: Creating a dissemination platform to meet the customers growing needs in a world where information is expected to be immediately accessible and easy to find.

The Overall Goals Continue to evolve with emerging technologies Provide data in easily understandable and searchable forms Allow Census Team to focus on innovations and advancements

MYTH OR FACT!

MYTH: Data tables are going away.  The great thing about CEDSCI is that it will appeal to the needs of all customers – regardless of their level of interaction with our data. The complex and heavy users will still have access to their tables, while general users will be able to consume information in a format that is simple and easy to understand.

MYTH: CEDSCI is an actual center that is solely focused on the program.  There isn't an actual "center" dedicated to the project. In fact, CEDSCI is made up of a team of three full-time government staff members and a cross-directorate leadership board. Having representatives from all directorates ensures we are making decisions that work best for the agency. As the project moves forward, the team will continue to grow.

Myth: CEDSCI is being developed without input from outside sources  The CEDSCI development is an ongoing process that can always be adapted based on customer feedback and requests. This ongoing communication between the CEDSCI team and the customer is critical to developing an agile system that meets the needs of every user.

MYTH: CEDSCI is just American Fact Finder's replacement.  Not at all. While CEDSCI will eventually be used instead of American Fact Finder, it will do much more than what American Fact Finder currently does, making it easier for the user to track down the data he or she needs.

New Data Tools

Census Business Builder

CENSUS EXPLORER

Census Explorer Current Editions Pop. EstimatesRetail People, Education & Income Commuting

Let’s Take A Look!  =SERP

Migration Statistics From the American Community Survey  Shows how many move from one specific county to another  Breaks down movers’ characteristics like education attainment and income  Helpful for local governments, realtors, planners and businesses

TIGERweb

 TIGERweb is an API and an online viewer that includes all layers of census geography as well as decennial population and housing unit counts.  TIGERweb includes data from the most recent TIGER benchmarks and TIGERweb Decennial includes 2010 and 2000 data from the 2010 benchmark.

TIGERweb  Best Uses  TIGERweb viewers: Viewing and comparing geographic areas without downloading files  WMS or REST services: Building applications using TIGER data

TIGER/LINE SELECTED DEMOGRAPHIC AND ECONOMIC DATA

 Spatial extracts from the Census Bureau’s MAF/TIGER database  Contains legal and statistical boundaries and are pre-joined or related with population and housing counts, 2010 Census Demographic Profile 1 attributes, ACS 5-year data profiles; selected ACS 5- year tables of County Business Patterns (CBP) data.

TIGER/LINE SELECTED DEMOGRAPHIC AND ECONOMIC DATA  Best Uses  Highly detailed for large-scale mapping  Geographic analysis; area calculation, geocoding  Determining precise area relationships  Mapping statistical data

Geodatabases Year ACS Data

Geodatabases  These GDSs combine finding and downloading geographic data with demographic data into one easy step.  Created using ArcGIS 10.2; the GDB files are compressed. Unzip/extract the files before using them.  data/data/tiger-data.html

Geodatabases Cont.  Each GDB contains:  A geographic feature class  A metadata table and 29 subject tables.  Table subjects correspond to ACS table numbering scheme subject.

Geodatabases Cont. RaceIncomePoverty DisabilityVeteran Status Housing Characteristics Migration
