Polygons Shapes with many sides!

Two-dimensional Shapes (2D) These shapes are flat and can only be drawn on paper. They have two dimensions – length and width. They are sometimes called plane shapes.

Polygons Two-dimensional shapes that have sides made from straight lines. E.g. triangles squares hexagons

Pentagon A two-dimensional shape with five straight sides and five angles.

Hexagon A two-dimensional shape with 6 straight sides and 6 angles.

Octagon A two-dimensional shape with 8 straight sides and 8 angles.

What shape is this?

A Hexagon

How many lines of symmetry has a Hexagon?

Properties of a Regular Hexagon  Has 6 equal sides  Has 6 equal angles  Has 6 lines of symmetry

What shape is this?

A Pentagon

How many lines of symmetry has a Pentagon?

Properties of a Regular Pentagon  Has 5 equal sides  Has 5 equal angles  Has 5 lines of symmetry

Polygons Shapes with many sides!

Lines of Symmetry - Look at these shapes Can you suggest a rule?

Regular shapes  All the sides are the same length  All the angles are equal  Have the same number of lines of symmetry as the number of sides

How many lines of symmetry? HeptagonOctagon Look at these shapes
