2 Long Range Impacts Over the next 20 years… Kern County’s population will double. Our streets, roads, and public transit systems need significant repairs and upgrades. More than $2 billion in additional funding is needed for transportation improvements.

3 Long Range Impacts Over the next 20 years… Kern County’s population will double. The San Joaquin Valley population is projected to grow from 3.2 million to 6.2 million over the next 20 years. In Kern County, we have had significant growth over the past 20 years. 1980– 400, ,000 60% increase 2030– 1,200, % increase

4 Long Range Impacts Over the next 20 years… With population growth there is growth in housing units and vehicles By 2030 there will need to be 160,000 housing units By 2030 there will be an additional 400,000 cars on the roads.

5 Long Range Impacts Over the next 20 years… Congestion will increase… Countywide by 765% From 323,000 hours/day in 1998 To over 278,000 hours/ day in 2030

6 Long Range Impacts Over the next 20 years… The accident rates will increase… County wide by 125% From 4500 accidents per year To 10,500 per year

7 Long Range Impacts Over the next 20 years… The impacts will include: The population will increase by 100% The highway system will increase by about 10% Congestion will increase by 765%. More congestion…longer waiting …increased accidents

8 Additional Funding is Not Available… Kern County currently has a $400 million backlog of road rehabilitation projects. If additional revenue is not identified, traffic congestion and the condition of our roads will get worse. We can’t rely on Sacramento to address our local problems. We must take matters into our own hands.

9 Additional Funding Needs Over the next 20 years… The Kern Region needs… $1.7 billion in new construction of streets and highways $400,000 million in new maintenance and rehabilitation funding $1 billion in public transportation and air quality funding Total $ 3.1 billion

10 Additional Funding Will…. Improve our local streets and roads Relieve traffic congestion Improve air quality and road safety in our communities.
