George Washington The face of George Washington isn’t just a portrait of a particular person. It has come to represent much more.

What are your feelings about George Washington? How much do you know about this man who is one of our greatest patriots? Is what you know about him merely popular myth about this famous personality? If you read something about him, you might find that he’s less than or perhaps even greater than the myth.

George Washington has been the subject of countless works of art for over 200 years. What has his face come to symbolize?

Washington was never comfortable having his portrait painted. Gilbert Stuart and Charles Wilson Peale painted the earliest portraits of Washington.

His face has come to symbolize patriotism and our heritage of democracy.
