Climate Science Centers Data Sharing Policy Emily Fort & Lisa Zolly Community for Data Integration Workshop August 17,

What are the Climate Science Centers?  Established by Secretarial Order 3289 (signed 9/14/09)  Partner with Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs)  5 of the 8 are established. Remaining 3 planned for FY2012  Housed at universities 2 North Central Southeast South Central Southwest Northwest Northeast Alaska Pacific Islands National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center

Background NCCWSC and CSCs are  Coordinating regional to national climate change research  Delivering research products to resource managers  Emphasizing information sharing and data To meet those goals, we have invested in data management and an information network First Product: Data sharing policy mirrored on NSF policy Approved by CSC Directors in July

Summary of Policy  Data management plan required for all projects  Data are available publically at the end of the project unless an exception is approved. If an exception is approved, the delay can’t be longer than two years. 4

Next Steps  Develop data management plan template and guidance for researchers  Develop CSC network  Identify tools or resources to assist researchers  Continue to work with Core Science Systems and CDI 5
