Do Now 10/2/09  Take out HW from last night.  Text page , #32-62 even  Copy HW in your planner.  Text page , #4-40 even  In your journal, answer the following questions. How much do you pay (or your parents) a month for your cell phone bill? What is your plan? (If you do not have a cell phone estimate the costs). Do you know how you are charged per month by your cell phone provider? Explain.

Homework Text page , #32-62 even  32) -4.2  34) -8.3  36) -6  38)  40) 42  42) -35  44) 35  46) 1/6  48) -2  50) 72 = ½ (16)x; 9 cm  52) 49  54) 2.5 mm  56) 245 lb  58) Sally worked 15 hours in a week and earned $135. How much did she earn an hour? $9  60) a. 18ft² b. 6ft.  62) 47.5 ft²

Objective  SWBAT solve two-step equations using algebra Did you know your cell phone bill is calculated from a two-step equation?

Equation-  mathematical sentence with an equal sign Like a scale, both sides must be EQUAL in order to be balanced.

Solving a Two-Step Equation How can you get the “unknown” by itself? How can you get the “unknown” by itself? “Undo” operations by using the INVERSE (opposite) operation to both sides of the equation. Solving Two-Step Equations STEP 1- “Undo” addition and/or subtraction. STEP 2- “Undo” multiplication and/or division. STEP 3- Solve for the variable. STEP 4- Check your work. 3x + 5 = -19

Solving Two-Step Equations… 3x + 5 = x = -24 3x = -24 Isolate the variable! Get ‘x’ by itself. To get the ‘x’ by itself first get rid of “adding 5.” Do the opposite. “Subtract 5.” Whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do the other side. 33 x = -8 x = -8 To get the ‘x’ by itself get rid of “multiplying by 3.” Do the opposite. “Divide by 3.”

Check Your Work! 3x + 5 = -19 x = -8 3(-8) + 5 = -19 Are both sides equal?
