 British rock bands, such as The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, and The Who modified rock and roll, adding to the standard genre harder sounds, heavier guitar riffs, and louder vocals. This sound created the basis for hard rock.  Hard rock emerged with British groups of the late-1960s, such as Led Zeppelin who mixed the music of early British rock bands with a more hard-edged form of blues rock and acid rock.  During the 70s, hard rock moved into the mainstream  Among the most famous hard rock groups were: Led Zeppelin, The Who, KISS, and Aerosmith  Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin Gene Simmons of KISS

 In 1980, Led Zeppelin disbanded after the accidental sudden death of drummer John Bonham, who died of asphyxiation after consuming too much alcohol. Bon Scott, the lead singer of AC/DC, also died in 1980 for similar reasons. With these deaths, the first wave of "classic" hard rock bands ended.  Some of the most famous bands form this era are: AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, and Queen. AC/DC

 In the early 1990s a new forms of rock broke into the mainstream, including grunge and punk.  In the late 90s and 2000s, rock fell out of the mainstream in favor of rap and pop.  Famous artists from this era include: Nirvana, Guns N’ Roses, Van Halen, and Metallica. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana Rappers, such as Eminem, became the most popular artists in music.
