Green Star Origin of the Standard How is it maintained / monitored Lead Agency Regions/areas of use Competing standards

Green Star Objectives of the Standard Key elements of the Standard Challenges or costs associated with the Standard Comparability of the Standard Evolution of the Standard

Origin of the Standard Green Building Council of Australia (Lead Agency) Objectives of GBCA to promote sustainable development and the transition of the property industry towards sustainability by promoting green building programs, technologies and design practices.

Origin of the Standard Green Star was created by GBCA for use in Australia to evaluate environmental initiatives of design, projects and /or buildings on a number of criteria including energy and water efficiency, indoor environment quality and resource conservation. Built from BREEAM and LEED with Australian adaptation.

How is it maintained/monitored Green star for the Convention Centres has been developed as a design tool not an ongoing operational tool and is still evolving. In Victoria and Australia other criteria are used such as Green Globe, Resource Smart, Waste Wise, Water Wise, and various Sustainability Victoria measures

Objectives of the Standard Establishment of a common language and standard of measurement for green buildings To drive change in the building market by focussing on those areas of environmental impact that are a direct consequence of a building’s briefing, design, construction and maintenance. i.e. those that can directly influenced by stakeholders

Key Elements Nine separate environmental impact categories Management, Indoor Environment Quality, Energy, Transport, Water, Materials, Land Use and Ecology, Emissions and Innovation

Key Elements Each Category is made up of credits Each credit addresses a particular initiative Points are awarded within each credit A percentage score for the category is determined An environmental weighting is then applied.

65 Credit Areas 161Points Available Management 15, Indoor Environment quality 21 Energy 48,Transport 13,Water 14 Materials 18, Land Use and Ecology 10, Emissions 17, and Innovation 5

Examples- Water 5 Credit Areas Total Points 14 Potable Water calculator 5 Water Meters 2 Landscape Irrigation Water Efficiency 2 Cooling Tower Water Consumption 4 Fire System Water Consumption 1

Example Materials 5 Credit Areas Total Points 12 Recycling Waste Storage 3 Recycled content of Structural Concrete 3, Steel 2 Furnishings Calculator 3, Floor Covering Calculator 3 PVC Minimisation 2 Sustainable Timber 2

Key Elements The final green star rating is based on weighted category scores and NOT the total number of points These category scores are added together and the maximum possible is 100 plus up to five additional points for innovation Ratings range from one star to six stars. Only four stars and above are eligible for certification. Five stars represents Australian Excellence Six Stars recognises World Leadership

FINANCIAL STUDY $1.1Billion Single Stage Precinct Investment COMPLIANT SCHEME $476M 5 STAR HOTEL $120M LIFESTYLE RETAIL $80M HOMEMAKER RETAIL $236M OFFICE / RESIDENTIAL $95M WHO BENEFITS? CONVENTION DELEGATES $762M LOCAL COMMUNITY $550M SUSTAINABLE DESIGN $86m. $86M MCCD Project

The additional capital cost of the 6 Star design solution created the following benefits: -Long term environmental marketing benefits (25 years) -A decrease in utility consumption generating savings of up to $400,000 per annum, this equates to a saving of $8-$10m net present value over the 25 year term The Green Star success is attributed to: -Dedicated resources – Client, Builder, Consultants, Architects -Active Senior Management of the process -Flat management structure -External peer review -Use Green Building Council of Australia resources GREEN STAR BENEFITS AND SUCCESS
