Digital Literacy Concepts and basic vocabulary

Digital Literacy Knowledge, skills, and behaviors used in digital devices (computers, tablets, smartphones) Basic understanding of computers and other digital devices How people find, evaluate, use, create and share information using digital technology.

Internet Worldwide system of computer networks. The most widely used part of the internet is the World Wide Web.

Browser Application program that provides a way to look and interact with all the information on the World wide Web. Tool used to scan a web page or pages in order to find information

URL Uniform Resource Locator The address for an internet resource. It helps the browser find files.

website Related connection of World Wide Web files that includes a beginning file called home page. All web sites have a home page address

Search engine A coordinated set of programs that includes: A spider (also called a "crawler" or a "bot") that goes to every page or representative pages on every Web site that wants to be searchable and reads it, using hypertext links on each page to discover and read a site's other pages A program that creates a huge index (sometimes called a "catalog") from the pages that have been read A program that receives your search request, compares it to the entries in the index, and returns results to you

Website evaluation Determining if a web site is reliable or not, if the information it provides is real, or if it’s author has the necessary credentials to be considered a reliable source of information. It is done by asking the 5 Ws.

5 W’s of website evaluation Who wrote the pages, is this person an expert? What does the author say is the purpose of the page? When was the site created and last updated? Where does the information come from? Why is this information useful to my purpose?
