Writing is a tool for Learning!!

Why do we need to use learning logs during class? Learning Logs helps you to FOCUS on what you are learning in classes by: Writing your thoughts Writing your reactions Writing your responses to class lectures, videos or discussions

Learning Logs…. - help us use writing as a process of discovery and to clarify ideas -may on occasion replace cornell notes when a class is not conducive to note taking -helps us make personal connections with subject matter -resulting in meaningful learning!!

Writing is a tool for learning! “How do I know what I think until I see what I write?”

Basic Learning Log Questions 1. What did you do in class today? 2. What did you learn? 3. What did you find interesting? 4. What questions do you have about what you learned? Let us do these together……………….

Writing About Mathematics Write a letter to another student in the class explaining, in detail, how to do a math problem that you are studying. This will force you to slow down and think carefully about the process that you go through in learning a math concept or solving a math problem

Writing about Social Studies “you are there” scenes: Place yourself in an historical period or event that you are studying and write about it from the point of view of someone who is there. In your response, focus on the questions of “what, who, why, how and what if.” Share and discuss your responses with other members of class.

Let us practice… Rubric 20 points for each step! 1. Choose an article of your liking (mark your text!) 2. Summarize your article by answering the following: who, what, where, when, and why you chose this article… 3. present your summary to the class 4. classmates must take notes on Learning Log Handout # Complete Learning Log #4.7  Apply what you learned to your life……. (2 paragraphs)
