Socialization for Adulthood

Socialization  The process by which people learn appropriate social role behaviours in order to participate in a ‘new’ society  This involves learning new values, attitudes and expectations

Resocialization  Occurs when a person discards old behaviours to change his or her behaviour  This happens as adolescents transition in to adulthood –  For example, having to learn new roles as employees, living away from home etc

Anticipatory Socialization  Allows people to learn and practice role behaviour before actually taking on a new role  For example – a part time job in the hgh school years helps teenagers experience the working world before they enter it after they finish school

 Anticipating, or planning for the change, allows a person to consider their options and develop strategies for managing their lives  For example – the planning that happens in high school concerning careers, ‘training’ in higher grades to help the transition between high school and university  You may have more responsibility at home

According to the Functionalists:  Our society has a ‘timetable’ or set of expectations for when role changes should happen  Functionalists say that peoples’ roles change as necessary to enable the society to continue to function in a stable way  For example, some of the ‘markers’ of when young people leave home have changed

According to the functionalists:  For example, some of the ‘markers’ of when young people leave home have changed  Changes in the expectations of young adult behaviour reflect a new economic and social organization
