Graphical Descriptive Statistics I Immaculata Institute July 29 – August 2, 2013 Dr. Brian Buerke Physics Department Albright College

The graphical statistics classes will focus on two of the Common Core standards S-ID-1 Represent data with plots on the real number line (dot plots, histograms, and box plots). S-ID-5 Summarize categorical data for two categories in two-way frequency tables. Interpret relative frequencies in the context of the data. Recognize possible associations and trends in the data. Immaculata 2013

The high school standards connect well with those for elementary and middle school Grades 3 – 5 Measurement and Data Make and interpret scaled bar graphs, line plots, and 2-column tables Grades 6 – 8 Statistics and Probability Understand variability and data characteristics, use wide variety of plots, draw inferences, make models, and use 2-way frequency tables Immaculata 2013

The classes will emphasize two themes  Modeling  Immaculata 2013

The “F” Test: You have 2 minutes to identify all the f’s in this passage Immaculata 2013

The “F” Test: You have 2 minutes to identify all the f’s in this passage Immaculata 2013 “The necessity of training farm hands for first-class farms in the fatherly handling of farm livestock is foremost in the minds of effective farm owners. Since the forefathers of the farm owners trained the farm hands for first-class farms in the fatherly handling of farm livestock, the farm owners feel they should carry on with the former family tradition of training farmhands of first-class farms in the effective fatherly handling of farm livestock, however futile, because of their belief that it forms the basis of effective farm management efforts.”
