Mon. 20 October 2003 SO/EUS Proto-consortium Meeting Mechanical Design Dr Douglas Griffin 4 CeSiC Manufacturing Felt of randomly orientated Carbon Fibres Impregnated with Phenolic resin and moulded into a blank at high pressure Vacuum heated to 1000ºC to pyrolize non-carbon components Reheated to 2100ºC to turn blank into graphite to produce the green body The green body is machined to the desired shape –Stiffening ribs –1mm wall thicknesses Green bodies glued together with Phenolic resin to form a larger composite green body Green body is infiltrated with molten Silicon at 1600ºC and furnace cooled Resulting structure is monolithic and isotropic Feature tolerances ± 10  m Can be EDM machined after structure has been manufactured
