Tracking Group Summary Bruce `Lefty’ Schumm UC Santa Cruz Arlington Linear Collider Workshop January 9-11, 2003

Since Santa Cruz A number of new groups have entered the scene 11 proposals to NSF/DOE (1 via ADR program) Three 90-minute phone meetings Focus on simulation (11/6/02) Focus on gaseous tracking (11/26/02) Focus on solid-state tracking (12/12/02) (Slides at Poised to ramp up effort when funding becomes available

Simulation Effort Goals of simulation subgroup: Develop requirements and specifications via the study of characteristic processes Explore performance characteristics of proposed options, including realistic backgrounds and track densities Help to delineate forward tracking options (pixels, strips, straws, etc.) Explore tracking/calorimetry interfacing issues, including energy-flow, cal-assisted tracking, etc.

Simulation Groups University of Oklahoma (Strauss, DOE pending): Forward tracking simulation SLAC (Graf, NA): Simulation framework, forward tracking Michigan (Riles/Yang, NSF pending): Tracking specs from central SUSY Santa Cruz (Schumm, NA): Tracking specs from forward SUSY Cornell (Peterson; NSF pending ): TPC tracking enhancement

Simulation Groups (cont’d) University of South Carolina (Purohit, DOE pending): Axial-only central tracking Louisiana Tech (Sawyer/Forest; DOE pending) Implementation of GEM tracking system Hampton University (Baker; NSF pending): Rates/occupancies in forward region Established near-term goals for simulation groups in ad-hoc noon meeting on Friday

Hardware Groups (Gaseous) TPC Groups Cornell/Purdue (Peterson/Shipsey; NSF Pending) Test chamber; GEM/Micromegas readout MIT (Fisher; NA) GEM detector development LBNL (Ronan; NA) Electronics, gas selection, resolution studies Wayne State (Bonvicini; NSF) Negative-ion TPC Victoria/Carleton (Karlen/Dixit; NA) Readout geometries, MPGD development

Hardware Groups (Gaseous) Other Groups Indiana/Notre Dame (Van Kooten/Hildreth; DOE Pending) Scintillating fiber intermediate tracker Louisiana Tech (Sawyer; DOE Pending) GEM-based forward tracking Hampton (Baker; NSF Pending) Straw-tube forward tracking

Hardware Groups (Solid-state) Michigan (Riles; NSF Pending) Frequency-scanned interferometric alignment Wayne State (Bellwied; NSF Pending) Silicon drift Santa Cruz (Schumm; DOE/ADR funded) Long shaping-time silicon strip readout

International Connectivity TPC Development Substantial collaboration between LBNL, Victoria, Carleton and European TPC R&D Group Silicon strip readout Contact and coordination with LPNHE Paris Potential association with CERN RD50 Simulation Close collaboration with University of Tokyo

Ongoing Efforts Physics Simulations (Michigan, Santa Cruz) (H. Yang, Michigan) Dependence of SUSY endpoint measurement upon tracker resolution Haijun Yang (Michigan)

Ongoing Efforts Simulation Infrastructure (SLAC, Cornell) Dan Peterson: Trackfinding diag- nostics; to be used e.g. for optimizing pad geometry

Ongoing Efforts TPC Hardware R&D (Victoria, Carleton, LBNL) TPC resolution with dispersed anode charge (M Dixit, Carleton University)

Ongoing Efforts Solid-state tracker R&D (Wayne State, Brookhaven, Santa Cruz) Silicon Drift Tracker Optimization (Wayne State, Brookhaven)

Guesstimated Testbeam Use YEAR ANTICIPATED WEEKS OF RUNNING For 3-year period ; corrected for under-reporting

Summary Chicago/Santa Cruz initiatives have drawn substantial new interest in R&D program  Some efforts await funding; all but one in attendance here at Arlington; all have begun to lay groundwork Guiding principle: basic `proof of principle’ R&D through 2005 (Design Manual?) Looking forward to international tracking review March 31; re-asses/confirm R&D priorities at that point
