When You Are Truly Sorry Psalms 51: /20/2007 Dr. Dane Boyles

When You Are Truly Sorry Introduction What should we do if we are really sorry? An event in the life of King David is helpful.

When You Are Truly Sorry Thankfully the story doesn’t end there. God in His great mercy, sent the prophet Nathan to confront the king, and David repented!

When You Are Truly Sorry 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. (Psalms 51:1-2, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. (Psalms 51:4-5, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. (Psalms 51:6-7, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. (Psalms 51:8- 9, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. (Psalms 51:1-12, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you. 14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. (Psalms 51:13-14, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. (Psalms 51:15-16)

When You Are Truly Sorry 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. 18 In your good pleasure make Zion prosper; build up the walls of Jerusalem. (Psalms 51:17-18, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry 19 Then there will be righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings to delight you; then bulls will be offered on your altar. (Psalms 51:19, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry  Basic Considerations. Definition of Repentance.  Repentance is not an emotion, but an attitude that leads to a specific action.  It is an attitude that chooses to confront sin rather than to ignore it.

When You Are Truly Sorry Guilt comes when we fail to repent.  Guilt is an emotion that can have devastating effects upon us.  David’s example.

When You Are Truly Sorry 3 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. (Psalms 32:3-4, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry  The example of the physical affects of depression. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. (2 Cor 7:10, NIV) 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” (Gen 3:10, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry How Do We Repent?  Identify areas of sin. (where we fail to meet God’s standards) 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalms 139:23-24, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry  Acknowledge Our Sin before God. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. (Psalms 51:4, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry Accept His Forgiveness. 1 Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 2 Blessed is the man whose sin the LORD does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit. (Psalms 32:1-2, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry Make restitution where necessary.  If we have wronged another person, it is necessary for us to seek that person’s forgiveness (Mat 5:23-24).  Zacchaeus.

When You Are Truly Sorry The final step of repentance is the actual turning away from known sin.  Repentance involves a turning away from evil.  It is a change of thinking that always results in a change of direction in our lives.

When You Are Truly Sorry 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalms 51:10, NIV)

When You Are Truly Sorry  Conclusion When we are truly SORRY in our lives, let’s do more than just say so. Let’s determine to be obedient to the Word of God, and repent of our sin. When we truly repent, God will forgive and cleanse us from our unrighteousness.
