The present tense

In English, there are two different types of present tense, whereas in German theres only one (yipeeee!!!) English The present tense can indicate either: what you always do what you are doing now (at this moment)

English Think of this example (your hobby is football): Question 1:What do you do in your spare time? I play football Question 2:What are you doing at the moment? I am sitting in class having fun

English Answer these questions to see if you notice the difference: What do you like eating? What are you eating at the moment? What instrument do you play? Are you playing an instrument right now? Do you work? Are you working now?

German The Germans dont have any problems like this because they only have one present tense and it covers both meanings. For example: Ich spiele FußballI play football I am playing football

German To form the present tense you need to take the infinitive of the verb and change the endings.

German First of all, lets check we know what all the words mean. ichI duyou (singular) er/sie/eshe/she/it wirwe ihryou (plural) Sieyou (polite) siethey

German Now lets use the verb spielen. ichspiel duspiel er/sie/esspiel wirspiel ihrspiel Siespiel siespiel. e st t en t en.

German Here are some more verbs that follow the same pattern. gehentrinken singenfinden liegenhören kommenschwimmen machensagen
