Introduction to Irrational Numbers We write “irrational numbers” using a “radical symbol,” often just referred to as a “radical.” √ 3 is an irrational.
 When adding radical expressions, you want to have the same root and radicand.  With the same root and radicand, you can add the coefficients and.
In order to add or subtract radicals: All radicals must be simplified. Then, you combine “like” terms. Square-root expressions with the same radicand.
6.3 Binomial Radical Expressions P You can only use this property if the indexes AND the radicands are the same. This is just combining like terms.

Adding and Subtracting Radicals ***Simplifying Radicals WS Due*** BELL WORK- To turn in

Adding and Subtracting  To multiply or divide radicals they have to have the same index (the little number before the root symbol)  To add or subtract radicals they have to have the same index AND the same radicand (the number under the root symbol)

Ex. 1:

Ex. 2:

Ex. 3: Find the exact measure of the perimeter of the rectangle.

IMPORTANT  If each radical in a radical expression is not in simplest form, simplify them first.  Then use the distributive property, whenever possible, to further simplify the expression.

Ex. 4:  (Let’s do this part on the white board)

Ex. 5: Simplify

Ex. 6: Simplify.

Time to work! 1)Simplify the radicals if needed 2)Combine like terms (ones where the radical has the same index and radicand)
