Black Codes Laws passed in the South to take away from NEW freedoms of African- Americans

RESENT/RESENTED To not like, to be upset about something, to be furious of something.

Civil Rights Act of 1866 African Americans gained equal rights. Authorized the use of federal troops to enforce the new laws.

RECONSTRUCTION POLICIES A. Southern Military Leaders Could Not hold political office.

Reconciliation To restore harmony, make peace Lincoln and Lee called for Reconciliation amongst Northerners/Southerners

Preservation T he act of keeping something safe Lincoln wanted to PRESERVE the Union/keeping it together and not separate.

13 th Amendment (1865) Bans slavery in the United States and any of its territories 1-3….SLAVES ARE FREE!

14 th Amendment (1868) Granted citizenship to ALL persons born in the United States and guarantees them EQUAL PROTECTION under law 1-4….CITIZENS MORE!

14 th Amendment……WHO WAS LEFT OUT OF BEING A CITIZEN? Native Americans were not granted CITIZENSHIP until 1924………56 YEARS LATER!

15 th Amendment (1870) Ensures all citizens the right to vote regardless of race, color or previous conditions of servitude. 1-5….VOTES CAN’T BE DENIED!

13 th, 14 th, 15 th Together These Amendments guaranteed EQUAL protection under the law for all citizens.
