Scripture Reading: Isaiah 58: 6 to 8

Isaiah 58: 6 to 8 True Fasting  “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice     and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free     and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them,     and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Isaiah 58: 6 to 8 True Fasting   Then your light will break forth like the dawn,     and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you,     and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.

Hymn 226 God, Whose Farm is all Creation

Hymn 226 Verse 1 (of 3) God, whose farm is all creation, take the gratitude we give; take the finest of our harvest, crops we grow that all may live.

Hymn 226 Verse 2 (of 3) Take our ploughing, sowing, reaping, hopes and fears of sun and rain, all our thinking, planning, waiting, ripening into fruit and grain.

Hymn 226 Verse 3 (of 3) All our labour, all our watching, all our calendar of care in these crops of your creation, take, O God; they are our prayer.

Isaiah 58 DRAMATISED

Isaiah 58 (With a Difference) God won't enjoy your worship; God won't be interested in your prayers, If you're only thinking about yourselves And about what a good time you're having; 2

Isaiah 58 (With a Difference) All your singing and all your praying; All your services and all your praises; Even your finest harvest thanksgiving, Is empty of meaning if you don't care for the poor! 3

Isaiah 58 (With a Difference) So, help those who are being unjustly treated; Share your food with those who are hungry; Open your homes to those who are in need of shelter; Lend out your goods to those who have fallen on hard times. 4

Isaiah 58 (With a Difference) This is the way to shine with God's light. This is the way to earn God's 'well done'. This is the way you will grow in your faith. This is the way you’ll discover God's presence. 5

Isaiah 58 (With a Difference) And this is the way God's love will flow like water from your life into the desert of the world. 6

Isaiah 58 (With a Difference) This is the way to know the Lord. This is the way to experience God's blessing. 7

Hymn 229 We Plough the Fields and Scatter

HYMN 229 Verse 1 (of 3) We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand; he sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes and the sunshine and soft refreshing rain.

HYMN 229 Refrain All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love.

HYMN 229 Verse 2 (of 3) He only is the Maker of all things near and far; he paints the wayside flower, he lights the evening star; the winds and waves obey him, by him the birds are fed; much more to us, his children, he gives our daily bread.

HYMN 229 Refrain All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love.

HYMN 229 Last Verse (of 3) We thank you then, O Father, for all things bright and good, the seed-time and the harvest, our life, our health, our food. Accept the gifts we offer for all your love imparts, with what we know you long for: our humble, thankful hearts.

HYMN 229 Last Refrain All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love.

Hymn 233

Hymn 233 Verse 1 (of 4) Come, you thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest-home: all is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin; God, our Maker, will provide for our needs to be supplied: come to God's own temple, come; raise the song of harvest-home.

Hymn 233 Verse 2 (of 4) All this world is God's own field, bearing fruit his praise to yield; wheat and tares together sown are to joy or sorrow grown; first the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear; Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be.

Hymn 233 Verse 3 (of 4) For the Lord our God shall come, and shall take his harvest home; from his field shall in that day all offences purge away; give his angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast; but the fruitful ears to store in his storehouse evermore.

Hymn 233 Last Verse (of 4) Even so, Lord, quickly come, bring your final harvest home; gather all your people in, free from sorrow, free from sin; there, forever purified, in your presence to abide; come, with all your angels, come, raise the glorious harvest-home!
