Progress Monitoring with a Purpose Presented by: Angela Solis Melinda Williams Becky Kephart

10 Purposes of a Cup???

Purpose of Progress Monitoring Progress Monitoring is a scientific based practice that is used both to assess a student’s academic performance and evaluate the effectiveness of Instruction. Benefits: Students receive instruction that is more appropriate to their individual needs Better informed instructional decisions and higher teacher expectations for students Required by Law (IDEA) Special education teachers are expected to collect and use data to make informed instructional decisions. Also, progress monitoring remains a required part of the IEP with IDEIA 2004 (reauthorization of Special Ed. law).

Let’s think about what we are doing now…

Types of Progress Monitoring Direct Indirec t Authentic Subjective vs. Objective CBM Curriculum Based Measurement

How Frequently do I progress monitor? The effectiveness of services and instructional method is determined most efficiently when progress is measured frequently.

What kind of Decision can I make with data? Screening Decisions Decide which student need help Progress Monitoring Decisions To decide when to move on to new goals, accommodate, or modify instruction Diagnostic Decisions To decide what kind of help students need and develop an instruction plan in response to a significant problem Outcome Decisions To decide when special services can be discontinued and to document overall effectiveness of efforts across all students

Progress Monitoring Tools Aimsweb Exceed Intervention Central Literacy Progress Monitoring Tools Analysis of Student work samples Use of a Rubric Teacher made test Review 360

Sample of Progress Monitoring When a list of 20 2 nd grade level words with long vowel word families (i.e. snake, bride, stroke, flute), Sean will accurately read 16/20 words in 4 out of 5 opportunities. How can I progress monitor this? When given a writing prompt, Sean uses correct capitalization 40 % of the time. How can I monitor this?

Let’s Try Some… 1.Using p.15 of 32 Writing Mechanism Scoring Form, score the sample writing titled: Birthday Mail (From: Region XIII) 2. Using p. 28 of 34 Oral Reading Fluency Miscue Analysis Worksheet do a 1 minute reading probe with a partner at your table and record data. (From: Region XIII and probe from Aimsweb)

Intervention Central … Create a math probe for fractions Create a probe for grade level sight words Create a math probe for place value

Making Progress Monitoring Seamless Start by writing goals and objectives that are measurable and observable Don’t let the data pile up before reviewing it! Utilize inclusion tracking sheets Utilize student work samples when possible FOCUS your efforts on helping the student in the area related to/or impacted by the disability Teach and Allow the student to chart their data Use the data to inform you and make changes based on the data
