Purpose of Progress Monitoring Progress Monitoring is a scientific based practice that is used both to assess a student’s academic performance and evaluate the effectiveness of Instruction. Benefits: Students receive instruction that is more appropriate to their individual needs Better informed instructional decisions and higher teacher expectations for students Required by Law (IDEA) Special education teachers are expected to collect and use data to make informed instructional decisions. Also, progress monitoring remains a required part of the IEP with IDEIA 2004 (reauthorization of Special Ed. law).
