A Modest Proposal Jonathan Rosenberg Cisco

Problem Statement Increasing gap between our specs and the SIP industry –Proxies vs. B2BUA –Open Internet federation vs. private networks Implications –Low Adoption Rates (GRUU, session policy, SIP identity) –Unaddressed problems (DTMF, SDP interop issues) –Declining Participation –“Real” work going elsewhere – SIP Forum UA config

What to do?!? Work to meet the needs of our customers – the real SIP deployments with real SIP problems Recognize and embrace the reality of SIP –B2BUAs as part of our architecture – we don’t even have a NAME for our intermediaries anymore! –Private networks are the norm and are legitimate uses of SIP Work proportional to impact to real networks –Less focus on ‘because 3gpp wants it’ –Less focus on ‘this would be cool’

What to do !?! Attract new talent –RAI bottleneck: same people, different room –Theory: If IETF is not relevant to people’s day jobs, they will not come –Solution: make IETF relevant to day jobs and they will come But don’t forget our mission – rich unified communications
