Smartly Using your SmartBoard It’s more than just an electronic whiteboard…

Objectives: By the end of this session, teachers will: –Know, and know how to connect the equipment used in using the SmartBoard –Know how to orient the SmartBoard –Know how to use basic SmartBoard equipment (pens, eraser) –Know how to use basic features in the SmartNotebook

The equipment The SmartBoard system consists of: –A computer: the computer still provides all the programs, data, etc. This computer must have the SmartNotebook software downloaded to use all the SmartBoard features –A projector: this is what puts the image on the SmartBoard –A SmartBoard: this is the equipment that “reads” your taps and pen strokes

Orientation The SmartBoard must be Oriented each time the projector is moved, when you connect a new computer to the system, or when you notice the cursor is not in line with your pen or finger. To Orient”: –Press both buttons on the SmartBoard tray –Touch each “X” using your finger or a pen tool –After you have touched all 9, the Board is now oriented.

Basic Tools Pen color is automatically set by which tray you take the pen out of. Eraser automatically activates when you remove it from the tray. To use a “pen” or “eraser” using your finger, tap the corresponding icon at the top of the menu tray. To pull up an on-screen keyboard, press the keyboard button on the front tray To “right-click”, press the mouse button on the front of the tray Numerous shapes, lines, pen effects, etc. are available in the toolbar at the top of the page No matter what program you are using, a SmartNotebook overlay automatically appears when you pick up a pen.

Using Programs You can pull up any program (Word, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, etc.) on the SmartBoard simply by moving the cursor on the screen and double- tapping the icon. You can “write” on the screen of whatever program you are in, and save the image you created

Changing your SmartNotebook Screen Color and Recording When the SmartNotebook is open, there is a tab on the side with an “A” and color palate. This lets you change the color of your page. You can also record (and playback) everything that is done on the page by using the “Page Recording” commands in this tab. You can extend the length of your page by tapping the “extend page” hyperlink at the bottom.

SmartBoard Gallery When the SmartNotebook is on the front screen, there is a side tab that looks like a picture frame. This is your SmartBoard Gallery, and it contains all kinds of searchable images and multimedia that you can insert in your presentation.

Resources In addition to the extended training you will receive this year, there are numerous resources and tutorials for the SmartBoard when you are ready to expand your usage, including:

Questions and Practice Go to your rooms and turn on your systems. Play around with some of the features shown today Your experienced colleagues and I will be around to assist with any challenges you experience Thank you in advance for your creativity and risk taking!!!
