Intensification of maize- legume based systems in the semi-arid areas of Tanzania Mathew Mpanda 9 th Sept 2014
Africa RISING (Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation – is a research component of the Feed-the- Future program of USAID linked to the Humidtropics CGIAR Research Program (CRP) ( sustainable intensification of farming systems Introduction
Introduction cont….! Operating in maize- livestock systems in semi arid part of Tanzania Implemented by IITA, ICRISAT, ICRAF, CYMMIT, ARI’s and University of Dodoma
WP 2: Soil fertility and Water mgt.. Characterization of the soil & vegetation at landscape level Trials on soil fertility & water mgt at plot level
Plot level trials…..! Research questions Which fertilizer and tree-based technologies are appropriate for SI of agro-pastoral systems in semi- arid central Tanzania? Are soil erosion management technologies compatible with agro-pastoral farming systems of semi-arid zones of central Tanzania? Are in situ water harvesting technologies effective in semi-arid region of central Tanzania to increase crop productivity and ecological benefits to farmers?
Plot level trials….! Experimental trials Spatial arrangements of maize vs pigeon pea/Gliricidia Trials on promising P & N rates Testing tillage practices to enhance crop productivity
Land health surveillance…..! Characterization of soil & vegetation in the landscape Soil fertility assessment Land degradation risk e.g. erosion, infiltration Stocking levels of trees and shrubs on the landscape
Some preliminary highlights...! Optimum P rate for maize production is 30 kg P ha-1 Optimum N rate for maize production in 20kg N ha-1 Plot # Cultivated area (Ha) Shrubs (Stems/ha) Trees (Stems/ha) Averag e ** Lower quintile Upper quintile Vegetation is mainly Acacia woodland Higher rate of regeneration Large part of the area is used for free grazing
Way forward…..! Plot level trials 2 nd year yield data are being processed Baseline soil samples at plot level collected Landscape level characterization of soil & vegetation Soil samples and vegetation data collected Soil still in lab for analysis Partial analysis of vegetation data done Link the plot level soil data with landscape data to improve and calibrate power of estimation
Thank you…!
