NERC Earth Observation Data Acquisition & Analysis Service The NERC Earth Observation Data Acquisition and Analysis Service (NEODAAS) is a NERC service combining the expertise of the Dundee Satellite Receiving Station (DSRS) and the Plymouth Marine Lab Remote Sensing Group to provide EO data to scientists in the NERC community. NEODAAS continues the reception and archive of direct broadcast satellite data from polar orbiting and geostationary satellites started in the 1970’s. Dundee currently receives around 30 passes per day from a range of satellites using several antennas and has a long-term archive of over 150,000 polar satellite overpasses. Historically, Plymouth has undertaken value-added near-real time data processing from the direct broadcast received at Dundee; in addition, other data available globally from NASA and ESA are processed. NEODAAS provides a single portal for raw (level 0/1) to geophysical mapped or composite data sets (level 3) available in near-real time or from the archive, for the EO, marine, atmospheric, terrestrial and Earth science communities. Background and aims Main data available through NEODAAS Near –real time and archive processing of 1km data  AVHRR: 1978 to date (Dundee); global coverage (NOAA)  SeaWiFS: 1997 to 2010 (Dundee)  MODIS: 2000 to date (Dundee); global coverage (NASA)  MERIS: 2002 to 2012; global coverage (ESA)  VIIRS: 2012 to date; global coverage (NASA) Global dataset mirrors  AVHRR SST (1981 to 2005) Pathfinder (NOAA)  MODIS (2000 to date) Ocean colour (NASA)  MERIS (2002 to 2012) (ESA)  SeaWiFS (1997 to 2010) Ocean colour (NASA) Web access and model intercomparison Data portal Select ungridded data by satellite / product / date Browse ungridded quicklooks Select mapped data by product / sensor / date Browse mapped quicklooks View coverage, metadata and related products Select individual quicklooks View ungridded quicklooks View mapped data Example MODIS true colour quicklook Registered users can view full resolution data in a Java browser that provides image analysis features such as pixel coordinates and real world values. The image palette can also be stretched to highlight features of interest. Contact details Website: Model Comparison Educational outreach activities Facilities on the NEODAAS website are used widely by schools, HEIs and the public They include access to entire archives of polar and geostationary browse images and a gallery of over 1400 enhanced images with options such as search by feature type Visits are arranged regularly for pupils, students and others and project help provided (left) Many books and other teaching materials use NEODAAS images, e.g. this Oxford Univ. Press textbook by Robin McIlveen (left) An illustrative NEODAAS image of young and old depressions from McIlveen’s textbook (right) Example images from the online gallery: UK & Ireland snow cover, 24 th Dec 2010 and Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption, 17 th Apr 2010 (right) NEODAAS images of significant weather and other events feature regularly in print, broadcast and online media articles Satellite Reception Polar orbiting satellites  AVHRR1978 to date  MODIS2000 to date  VIIRS2012 to date  CZCS1979 to 1986  SeaWiFS 1997 to 2010 Geostationary satellites  Meteosat2001 to st Generation  Meteosat2004 to date 2 nd Generation  Archive of images since 2006 from satellites covering Indian Ocean, Asia, West Pacific, East Pacific, Americas, Atlantic. (above) Polar satellite coverage and pass frequency at Dundee reception station. (right) Example geostationary quicklook image from Dundee website. (above) Example full pass polar quicklook image from Dundee website. NEODAAS operates a number of polar and geostationary satellite reception systems at Dundee. All systems are designed, built and maintained by NEODAAS staff. Modelled data fields from MRCS are available for comparison. This includes both visual comparison of multiple model variables (top) and plots of model statistics such as ROC (bottom).
