Outcome & Indicators  Outcome: Participants will learn about the structure, inquiry process, and resources in BCPS Online Research Models and Slam Dunk lessons in order to prepare for Students and Teachers Accessing Tomorrow.  Indicator: Participants will be able to implement BCPS Online Research Models and Slam Dunk lessons in order to facilitate student research and inquiry-based learning in the content areas.

Overview  Get familiar with BCPS Online Research Models and Slam Dunk lessons for facilitating student research in the content areas by:  Foundations and evolution of Online Research Models and Slam Dunk lessons.  Standards alignment.  Structure, inquiry process steps, and resources.  Integration of information literacy skills instruction.  Strategies for implementing/facilitating with students.

Issues with K-12 Student Research “Too many of the learning activities in school libraries are low-level cut and paste activities, such as transferring facts from library resources on to worksheets or just cutting information off the Internet to pass in for a report. Little learning results and plagiarism dominates. Online Research Models for In-Depth Research: Backgound  Development of our Online Research Models and Research Guides has been informed by our study of information literacy process models and research- based pedagogy, and by working directly with experts.  Dr. Jamie McKenzie's Online Research Module inspired our initial ORM structure and use of higher-level Essential Questions requiring critical thinking, analysis and synthesis of information from multiple sources.Online Research Module  We made some modifications to McKenzie’s ILPM and so called ours Online Research Models.  Scenario, Task & Product, Assessment, Question, Gather, Organize, Conclude

Online Research Models for In-Depth Research Dr. Carolyn Kulthau's Information Search Process (1985), Guided Inquiry (2007) and Guided Inquiry Design (2012) have inspired our inquiry-based process and revised structure.

Online Research Models for In-Depth Research  1998: We began annual Summer Curriculum Workshops for designing ORMs integrated with content curricula.  2015: Online Research Models & Slam Dunk Lessons for Integrating the CCSS Research Strand - Curriculum writing team of experienced library media specialists & Towson University School Library Media Cohort students.  We collaborate with content area curriculum writers to design ORMs/Slam Dunk lessons for specific content units.  The ORMs are now referenced in content curriculum guides as a primary means of addressing unit objectives.
