dictator An all powerful leader Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini were dictators.

fascism An all powerful leader, a dictator, has the central control of a nation. Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini were fascists in Germany and Italy.

nationalism Taking pride in one’s own country

Axis The group of nations including Germany, Italy and later Japan that formed one side in World War II.

Allies The group of nations including Britain, the U.S and the Soviet Union that formed one side against the Axis.

D-Day A huge invasion- the largest ever by sea- became known as its code D-Day. The allies landed in France to free Europe from the Germans.

Holocaust They put people in concentration camps where they worked or were killed. The Nazi murder of 11 million people.

Internment Camps They were put in these camps, not because they had been tried and found guilty of something, but because either they or their parents or ancestors were from Japan. They were also easily identifiable due to their race. There was no similar large- scale roundups of German or Italian-Americans, even though we were also fighting them during World War II.

United Nations When? Formed after WWII Why? They knew that they must work together to prevent war. What? It works for peace, gives aid to poor nations, helps to control disease, and works for human rights. Who? All nations has one vote in the General Assembly. Power, however, lies with the 5 allies who won World War II: The U.S., Britain, the Soviet Union (now Russia) France, and China.

Atomic Bomb A hugely destructive weapon When it explodes, it makes a huge mushroom-shaped cloud that spreads cancer- causing gas.

Atomic bombs are weapons of mass destruction killing many people at one time.
