What is the purpose of characterization?

Good Readers -Develop fluency -Understand literary elements -Essential techniques that help us to understand literature -Provide evidence or proof for assertions they make about the text assertions

assertion  an emphatic statement that something is true  Good readers make assertions using proof in the form of explicit and implicit text.

Implicit and Explicit  Explicit information is any idea that is stated.  With explicit information, you see the text explained!  Since you are looking for explicit information in what is read, the explicit information will be written in the text. There is no need to look for clues. Just read. If the information is written it is explicit.  Implicit information is understood but it is not stated. To find implicit information in what is read, you will have to think about what you read. Look for clues as you read.  Implicit information is not written. But the idea is there. Implicit information is using what is read to make an inference. But what is an inference? ExplicitImplicit What does this remind you of ?

Practice  It happened two weeks ago at the grocery store in front of maybe five people. There was a wet spot Mrs. Jeffries didn’t see and –vlooop, down she went. Also, at the beginning of the school year, walking up the stairs carrying the latest short story she had copied. Papers were everywhere. Students were staring. She could feel the temperature of her ears and cheeks starting to rise. It reminded her of the time over the summer when she was carrying fruit salad and… 1. How can we characterize Mrs. Jeffries? Mrs. Jeffries is _______________ 2. Direct or indirect, through _______ if indirect. 3. Proof implicitly stated or explicitly stated.

Practice  All living things are made up of cells. Since humans are alive, we are also made of cells. Cells make our body tissue. Tissue makes our body organs. Organs make our body systems. Cells are the building blocks of our bodies. 1. What are made of cells? 2. What is the main idea of the article? Explicitly stated or implicitly stated?

Practice  All living things are made up of cells. Since humans are alive, we are also made of cells. Cells make our body tissue. Tissue makes our body organs. Organs make our body systems. Cells are the building blocks of our bodies. 1. How do you know birds are made of cells? (This is an implicit question)-What’s the answer?

Implicit  The alarm rang. Beth jumped out of bed. As she passed her brother’s door, she saw him still fast asleep. She shouted at him to wake up, or he would begin the school week late again.  What information within this paragraph is implicitly stated?

EXPLICIT VS. IMPLICIT EXPLICIT- in the text IMPLICIT – In My head direct, clear, obvious, overt Indirect, Implied, unspoken, inferred Which of the 2 types of text is more challenging to find?

All Example 1  Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim's gold watch that had been his father's and his grandfather's. The other was Della's hair. Had the queen of Sheba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty's jewels and gifts. Had King Solomon been the janitor, with all his treasures piled up in the basement, Jim would have pulled out his watch every time he passed, just to see him pluck at his beard from envy. Underline the portion of the text that explicit textual evidence that details Jim and Della’s most prized possessions.

Implicitly Stated Information. Make an inference. 2  It’s hard to live in a small studio apartment with a man who is learning how to play the violin”. That’s what she told the police as she handed them the broken bat. 1. What do you think has happened? 2. Why did it happen? 3. How does the story end?

Implicitly Stated Information. Make an inference. 3  On that morning, as the fall like weather began with a quiet rain, across the country soot and ash were raining down on a city, and our nation knew it would never be the same again.  1. What is being referred to here?  2. What are the unspoken implications of this event?
