Why Do We Use Them?.  Graphs and charts let us organize data in an easy to read way.  They allow us to make quick comparisons.  There are many types.
Graphing. Data Tables are a neat and organized way to collect data Graphs allow you to easily show the data in a way that people can draw conclusions.

BAR GRAPH Bar Graph: Uses bars to show quantities or numbers for comparison

DATA Data: A collection of information used in graphs or charts for analysis. It can include numbers, measurements or facts.

FREQUENCY Digit Times on chart Data: 2, 5, 6, 8, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 2, 9, 3, 5, 6, 7, 3, 4, 5, 5, 1, 6, 7, 4, 9, 9, 2, 3, 6 Frequency: the number of times an item occurs in data

FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION TABLE Frequency distribution table: a table used in statistics as a method of recording the data collected Vehiclefrequency Car llll (4) Truck lll (3) motorcycle llll (5)

LINE PLOT Line plot: a number line long enough to encompass all numbers in the sample, showing a dot or mark over the position corresponding to each number often - used with frequency tables

GRAPH Graph: drawing or diagram used to record information

INTERVAL Interval: the distance between the numbers on a scale or graph interval =

LINE GRAPH Line graph: graph that shows how data changes over time

AVERAGE or MEAN Average: number found by dividing the sum of a set of numbers by the number of addends; average and mean are synonyms 100, 85, 100,90,95 Step 1: add = 470 Step 2: divide: = 94%

MEDIAN Median: the middle value in an ordered set of values 100, 85, 100,90,95 Step 1: ORDER THE NUMBERS 100, 100,, 90, 85 Step 2: CROSS OFF VALUES UNTIL YOU FIND THE MIDDLE VALUE

RANGE Range: the difference between the highest and lowest number in a given set of numbers 100, 100, 95, 90, – 85 = 15

MODE MO de: the number that occurs m ost o ften in a given set of numbers 100, 85, 100, 90, 95

PICTOGRAPH Pictograph: Graph which uses pictures to represent quantities

PIE CHART Pie Chart: a graph using a divided circle where each section represents part of the total

SCALE Scale: the series of numbers placed at fixed distances on a graph scale

STEM AND LEAF PLOT Stem and Leaf Plot: a data display that shows groups of data arranged by place value

TABLE Table: mathematical information organized in columns and rows Favorite Zoo Animal Woodpecker 6 Koala 10 Giraffe 9 Elephant 8 Cobra 4

TALLY Tally: marks used to record counting

TREE DIAGRAM Tree diagram: a diagram shaped like a tree to display sample space by using one branch for each possible outcome

VENN DIAGRAM Venn Diagram: diagram that uses geometric shapes to show relationships between sets
