 The respiratory system uses many parts for breathing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide.  These include the nose, the trachea, and the lungs.

The Respiratory System

The system of the body that deals with breathing The body takes in the oxygen that it needs and removes the carbon dioxide that it doesn’t

The Oxygen Delivery System Main function - to supply the blood in the circulatory system with oxygen Does this through breathing

Breathing and Respiration are NOT the same thing!

Breathing Moving air in and out of the lungs

Cellular Respiration Chemical reaction that releases energy Occurs in the mitochondria of the cell (called cellular respiration)

Inhalation Breathing in Body gets oxygen from the air Rib muscles contract to pull ribs up and out Diaphragm muscle contracts to pull down the lungs Tissue expands to force (pull) in air.

Exhalation Breathing out Get rid of carbon dioxide Rib muscles relax Diaphragm muscle relaxes Tissue returns to resting position and forces (pushes) air out

Parts of the Respiratory System Mouth Nose Trachea –splits into bronchi –bronchioles Lungs –Bronchioles –Alveoli Diaphragm

Pathway of Oxygen 1.Air into nose or mouth 3. Air goes to the Trachea 4. Bronchi 5. Lungs6. Bronchioles 7. Alveoli 8. Capillaries (picks up O 2 and drops off CO 2 ) 9. Bloodstream 2. The air moves through the pharynx and larynx and the epiglottis opens.

Nose Mouth Pharynx Larynx Trachea Lungs Bronchi Bronchioles DiaphragmAlveoli

Pathway of Carbon Dioxide 9. Air out of nose or mouth 7. Trachea 6. Bronchi 5. Lungs4. Bronchioles 3. Alveoli 2. Capillaries (drops off CO 2 and picks up O 2 ) 1. Bloodstream 8. Epiglottis opens then CO 2 moves through larynx and pharynx

Lungs Main organs of the respiratory system Bronchial tubes Many smaller tubes Alveoli (alveolus) – surrounded by capillaries Average adult's lungs contain about 600 million of these air-filled sacs

Bronchi The trachea splits into 2 tubes, 1 to each lung The bronchi splits into smaller branches in the lungs called bronchioles

Alveoli Tiny sacks surrounded by capillaries Where gas exchange occurs Capillaries pick up oxygen and drop of carbon dioxide

The Diaphragm The muscle that controls the breathing process. The diaphragm flattens to cause the chest to expand and air is pulled into the lungs. When the diaphragm relaxes, the chest collapses and the air in the lungs is forced out.
