GPS Standard M2N5. Students will represent and interpret quantities and relationships using mathematical expressions including equality and inequality signs (=, ). Objective For students to learn, understand, and apply the concept of greater than, less than, or equal to by accurately using the symbols and concept in numerical sentences and other contexts in addition to making real world connections.

Meet Cody Cody the Crocodile lives in a swamp with big fish and little fish. He is a very hungry crocodile that has a big mouth so he can eat big fish. Help him to fill up on lunch by eating as many big fish as he can. So put your waders on, we are wading in! Crocodiles Crossing

Cody wants to always eat the largest fish around. When his mouth is open and pointing to the largest fish, it looks just like the greater than symbol.

Check It Out! When reading a problem, it is just like reading a book. Read the problem from left to right so the symbols make sense. Use a < sign to say less than. Use a > sign to say greater than. Use an = sign to say equal to.

Example: 16 > 9 In my head I read it as “sixteen is greater than nine.” 169

Example: 5 < 7 In my head I read it as “five is less than seven.” 57

Notice in the examples that the mouth of the symbol is always facing the largest number > 9

Since we must always read left to right, sometimes the less than symbol is used ( < ). Notice that Cody’s mouth is always ready to eat the largest number, yummy! < 10

Now it’s your turn to help Cody pick the largest number to eat. Remember Cody doesn’t want to waste his time with the little fish! Help Cody solve this problem. 4 ? 2

4 > See, Cody always eats the biggest number. Cody sure has eaten a lot of fish! He needs to take a long nap, so he’s going to lay down on a rock and let the sun warm him. He trusts you to pick only the largest numbers for him to eat when he wakes up, so don’t let him down!!

Solve this problem: 13 ? 47 Is it ?

Answer 13 < 47 Good, the opening of the sign faces the largest number, just like Cody showed you. He was right to trust you.

Try this one out. 20 ? 11 Is it ?

Answer 20 > 11 Good job, at this rate, Cody will be bursting with strength in no time.

On the sheet of paper that you have been handed write down your answers to each problem (either > or <). When you are finished with all the problems turn the sheet into the blue box. Remember to put your name on it. Help me to complete this mission while I finish my tanning. Your Mission:

Wow, you’ve done such a great job. When Cody wakes up he will be so proud of you. He might even let you ride on his back, wouldn’t that be fun?

,396 5, ,399 4, ,402 3,401 ? Show me ya skills!

Cody thanks you.
