BUSINESS SENSITIVE 1 Pavement Health Track Analysis Tool for Determining the Health of Pavement Networks Sponsored by FHWA Contractor: Battelle/ARA Team Butch Wlaschin, P.E., FHWA Steve Gaj, FHWA, Maks Alam, P.E., Battelle

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 2 Pavement Health Track Analysis Tool Project Background Derived from FHWA Office of Policy sponsored R&D project where Battelle/ARA developed simplified version of ME-PDG mechanistic-empirical pavement prediction models for use in the Highway Economic Requirement System (HERS) and the Highway Cost Allocation (HCA) for Truck Size & Weight Study Developed under: NCHRP Project 1-37A NCHRP Project 1-40A NCHRP Project 1-40B NCHRP Project 1-40D

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 3 About Pavement Health Track Analysis Tool Uses new ME-PDG mechanistic-empirical pavement prediction models, ME-PDG level 3 defaults, and the HPMS 2010 database (or PMS database) Aligns pavement “design” and “performance” through common ME-PDG models and principle Moves beyond IRI, uses key performance indicators (cracking, faulting, rutting, and smoothness) to track pavement health. Currently is being tested with state DOT’s for compatibility. Network tool to better manage highway pavements. Expected full release in 2010.

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 4 HPMS 2010/PMS data PROCESS RAW DATA COMPUTE CRITICAL PAVEMENT DISTRESSES NEW HMA & HMA/HMA Alligator Cracking Rutting in Wheel Path Transverse Cracking Smoothness (IRI) NEW RIGID (JPCP) Transverse Cracking Transverse Joint Faulting Smoothness (IRI) COMPOSITE HMA/PCC Reflection Cracking Smoothness (IRI) OUTPUTS Adjusted Predicted Distresses Remaining Service Life

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 5 Pavement Health Using RSL Pavement health defined as the time in age or load applications from initial construction or reconstruction to first major rehabilitation as warrented by pavement ride and structural conditions Flexible enough to adjust the terminal values as defined by the owner Initial Construction Or Reconstruction First Major Rehab Distress or IRI * Current Distress/IRI Level * RL Terminal Distress/IRI Current Age A B C

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 6 Example Application of ME-PDG Models to Determine RSL

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 7 Example Application to Determine RSL (Triggered by Critical Distress) Current age = 10 years Critical distress is slab cracking –Remaining life triggered by excessive cracking is 5 years Key performance Indicators Predicted Life (Age in Years) Remaining Life (Age in Years) Cracking155 Faulting2010+ Rutting2010 IRI2010+

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 9 Pavement Health Distribution: I-35, Iowa

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 10 Distress Distribution Along I-35, Iowa

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 11 Health Index Along I-35, Iowa: Trigger by Terminal Distresses

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 12 Health Index Along Corridor: I35, Iowa NBI Rating

BUSINESS SENSITIVE 13 Potential Uses of Pavement Health Track Analysis Tool Distribution Charts Estimate the pavement health for the pavement network or a corridor Detect uneven distribution of pavement health which may effect the future rehabilitation, preventive maintenance, budgetary and workload needs. Combine with performance indices of bridges and roadway congestion to prioritize rehabilitation and maintenance
