We started from a survey made in our school, about TERRORISM. TERRORISM

There are different opinions among students and teachers, so there are various answers.

RELIGION STUDIES : violent action in order to change an undesired situation. We can’t say “religious terrorism”; no religion sustains terrorism. The present situation is only a manipulation of religion. PHILOSOPHY : crazyness of ideology. It can be the product of propaganda directed to weak personalities as a consequence of poor historical and social situations.

ITALIAN LITERATURE & HISTORY : violence that appeals to an ideology. We must distinguish between political and “religious”; both of them take origin from difficult political, economical and social situations. ENGLISH : violent reaction to a political or social situation. The definition “religious terrorism” is a paradox: no religion considers terrorism as a way to spread ideas.

CHRISTIAN : violent action against civilization. SIMONE : it’s a form of crazyness; impossible to be revomed. MICHELA : phenomenon that has become too widespread. GIOVANNI : the wrong way to obtain something.

ANDREA : the crusades of the 21st century. CHIARA : the violent death of innocents in order to attract the attention of powerful people. LUCA : indiscrimate attack to cause disorder and uncertainty. MATTEO : the symbol of protest and revolt of people who feel oppressed and exploited. I think there are different and non-violent ways to express disagreement.

MR. CONORI : use of violence against people who have no direct responsibility in the present situation. MISS GATTI : this attack recalls the one to the railway station in Bologna. It is the worst aspect of terrorism: to strike innocents.

MARCO : it’s the wrong way to make soldiers leave Iraq. ANDREA : I suppose we could have expected it some time, after the 11th of September! MICHELA : it’s a form of psycological violence meant to put pressure on politicians. LARA : I suppose now it’s time to hit Britain or Italy…

There has been a variety of answers: None; man has always been like that. There have always been winners and losers. Yes, tolerance. There should be more attention on educating people to non-violence and tolerance.

No, because it has already become part of our society and people have got used to it. Life is only one. How can we deny it? The only way is non-violence. No, because we must not fight terrorism, but its causes.
