Chemical Properties A property of matter which changes the matters identity (composition) when it is observed. Another way to say this is, the matters.
Physical and Chemical Changes
 A characteristic of a substance that can be observed.
Chemical Property - The ability of a substance to change into another new substance - This type of property can only be observed through experimentation.

By the end of the day today: I will be able to analyze a change in matter and determine if it is a chemical or physical change.
Pg. 22. Physical Properties  Characteristics observed that don’t change identity  Physical properties help identify substances.
Mass, color, volume, and weight are examples of physical properties. A physical property can be observed or measured without changing the substance. Example:
Chemical and Physical Properties. Matter All matter has 2 types of properties: Physical properties and chemical properties.
I.Properties & Changes in Matter Extensive vs. Intensive Physical vs. Chemical.
Describing Matter. Reviewing MATTER Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space – Mass – the amount of matter in a substance – Volume – the amount.
Chemical Properties Property of matter that describes a substances ability to participate in chemical reactions. (Change into new matter.) Flammability.

Chemical Properties and Changes Study Pack #7

Today’s Goals… I can describe a substance using its chemical properties I can describe a chemical change I can compare physical and chemical changes

Chemical Properties Can only be observed while the object is changing into a NEW substance

Examples: Flammability (ability to burn) Ability to rust Ability to tarnish

Chemical Changes Result in a NEW substance Not easily reversed

Examples: Wood burning Iron rusting Silver tarnishing Cooking/Baking Foods spoiling Leaves changing colors in the fall

Signs of Change How do you know a change has occurred? Gas bubbles Production of heat, light, smoke Change in color Sound

Assignment Write a letter to a friend describing the difference between a physical and chemical change! Don’t forget to give an example of each.
