1 Physical and Chemical Changes

2 Learning Goals Understand the definitions of physical and chemical changes Understand how to identify whether a physical or chemical change has occurred

3 Physical and Chemical Properties Review
Properties are descriptors of the substances that you can observe It is also the ability of the substance to change, not the change itself

4 Physical Change Physical Change: A change where the composition of the substance remains the same Does not involve the formation of another substance and can usually be reversed Examples: Boiling water, dissolving sugar in water

5 Chemical Change Chemical change: A change that results in the formation of new chemical substances. Does involve the formation of a new substance and the change cannot be reversed Examples: Burning a candle, rusting of iron, metabolism of food in the body

6 Chemical Change II Energy is Produced (heat or light) (eg. fireworks)
Change in Color (eg. leaves, bleach) Noticeable Odor (after reaction has begun) (eg. rotten egg) Formation of a Precipitate (eg. Baking soda and calcium chloride) Formation of Bubbles (eg. Baking soda and vinger)

7 Chemical Change III Chemical Change (Sodium in Water) example: Start at 4:02 Physical and Chemical Properties of Sodium? Physical and Chemical Changes Occurring? You can watch the whole video for examples of each one of these chemical changes occurring at home if you are interested.

8 Physical and Chemical Changes Examples
Burning wood? Melting cheese? Milk Souring? Silver Tarnishing? Blowing bubbles in your chocolate milk?
