Higgs Searches at Tevatron Makoto Tomoto 戸本 誠 Fermilab/Nagoya University On behalf of the DØ & CDF Collaborations Tsukuba, April 21 st, 2006

Makoto Tomoto (FNAL/Nagoya) April, 21st Higgs boson searches Not allowed by SM Theory predict - SM Higgs mass is light - New physics at ~ 1 TeV Experiments tell us: - MH > 114GeV (95% CL) by LEP - MH < 175GeV (95%CL) by global fit ( center value = – 30 GeV) Allowed Tevatron has capability to search for Higgs bosons in this mass region Mass of fundamental particles are given by Higgs boson –Only particle predicted by SM and NOT discovered yet. –SM cannot predict the exact mass of Higgs boson, but…. Higgs bosons with extension models have been also looked for –2HDM  5 physical Higgs bosons, m H (lightest) < 135GeV

1. Standard Model Higgs boson searches

Makoto Tomoto (FNAL/Nagoya) April, 21st SM Higgs searches at Tevatron Production Excluded  (pb) Gluon Fusion Associated production M H < 135GeV : H  bb (di b-jets mass) –gg  H  bb sink down into deep QCD backgrounds  WH  l bb (lepton + E T )  ZH  bb, llbb (E T or lepton(s)) M H > 135GeV : H  WW (di-lepton) –gg  H  WW  l l (opposite charge) –WH  WWW  l l X (same charge) 1.0 – 0.1 pb fb – 0.02 pb fb -1 m H (GeV/c 2 ) Excluded Decay Br(H  X) 135GeV

Makoto Tomoto (FNAL/Nagoya) April, 21st WH  l bb (l=e,  ) e/  b jet single b-tagging - e/  + E T restricts QCD backgrounds - Excess due to Higgs from dijet mass? single b-tagging double b-tagging combined

Makoto Tomoto (FNAL/Nagoya) April, 21st ZH  bb If lepton is missing  WH  l bb combined single b-tagging - Large E T rejects lots of QCD bkg - QCD bkg estimated from sideband  (ZH  bb) ||  (WH  l bb) single b-tagging double b-tagging combined

Makoto Tomoto (FNAL/Nagoya) April, 21st WH  WWW*  l l’ X (l, l’ = e,  ) CDF Preliminary (L=194pb -1 ) DØ Preliminary observedexpected  (MH=155GeV) ee10.70 ± ± 0.06 ee ± ± 0.19  ± ± 0.22 L=363pb -1 QCD q flip Event Selection –Same charge di-lepton from W’s (One from H, the other from WH) suppress SM backgrounds –pT (lepton)> 15 GeV –E T > 20 GeV Main backgrounds –WZ production  MC –Charge flip from Z/  *  ll, WW, and tt  llX  data –QCD multijet, W+jets  data

Makoto Tomoto (FNAL/Nagoya) April, 21st Combined Higgs boson search First attempt to see a combined result from DØ –14 different analysis decay mode, lepton flavor, b-tag conditions –Combination is done by modified frequentists method (CLs) So far, a factor of 15 away from SM prediction (M H =115GeV) –with L=2fb -1, CDF/DØ combined, NN b-tagging, NN selections, track-cal jets, increased acceptance, additionally new channels, cross efficiency, and reduced systematic cross section factor  1

Makoto Tomoto (FNAL/Nagoya) April, 21st hb(b) L=260pb -1 At least 3 b-tagged jets –pT cuts optimized –b-tag rate estimated from data (~2%) 2 b-tagged sample  b-tag rate – Z(bb,cc)+jets, tt estimated from MC No Excess found –95% C.L. from fit of dijet mass at least 3 b-tagged jets fit region search
