Shared History & Collections Need for multiple copies for access and preservation led to cooperative agreements for collections in paper, microfilm, and digital formats

Florida & Caribbean Cooperative Collections 1930s: UF begins academic program on Latin America and begins collecting Latin American materials for the libraries 1939: Acting University Librarian, Henrie May Eddy dies in a plane crash while traveling to Brazil on a Latin American collection development trip 1947: UF establishes Florida Newspaper Project, microfilming Florida newspapers 1948: Fund created for acquisition of Inter-American and Caribbean materials 1948: Farmington Plan began (US based collaborative collecting of foreign materials, Caribbean not included) 1951: UF appoints a Latin American Bibliographer and Latin American Collection is established 1952: Farmington Plan modified; UF accepts total responsibility for the Caribbean 1956: SALALM founded 1956: Association for Research Libraries (ARL) began the Foreign Newspaper Microfilm Project : Caribbean Newspaper Imaging Project, Phase I (Mellon Grant) 1999: Caribbean Newspaper Imaging Project, Phase II (Mellon Grant) 2000: University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Libraries and the Virgin Islands Division of Libraries, Archives & Museums (DLAM) are awarded a digitization grant; the University of Florida Libraries provide technical infrastructure (IMLS Grant) : Digital Library of the Caribbean (TICFIA Grant) : Caribbean Newspaper Digital Library (TICFIA Grant)

dLOC Project Structure Concept – Provide a digital voice to those institutions in the Caribbean who wished to contribute – Build infrastructure through equipment and training throughout the Caribbean – Assist in digital preservation of the resources threatened materials

dLOC Project Structure Whole is more than the sum of its parts – Technologically Shared core infrastructure with one technical partner Modular infrastructure so that all materials are cross-listed, cross-searchable and each partner’s materials display under each partner with customized interfaces and attribution on each item – Shared governance Executive Board – Nine members elected by partner institutions Scholarly Advisory Board – Seven members appointed by the Executive Board – Shared responsibilities Selecting content, permissions and copyright review, digitizing materials, participating in building dLOC through individual and collective work Contributing partners retain all rights to their materials
