3.10 Using % Goals: to solve a word problem including % of increase and decrease

Steps 1.Read the question thoroughly a few times 2.Write down information the problem gives you 3.Form an equation 4.Solve 5.Check your answer

The tax on an car was 6% of its price. What was the price of the car if the tax was $633? -Price of car ? X -Tax is 6 % of price of car 0.06(x) -Total tax is $ (x) = 633 -Solve x = 633/0.06 x = 10,550 -Check the price of the car was $ If we find 6% of 10,550 we get $633 so it checks out

% of Increase and % of Decrease Some % word problems will ask for % of increase of decrease. In this case divide the amount of increase or decrease by the original amount

Ryan Seacrest worked for $6 an hour for the first month he was on the job. He was then given a raise to $6.24 an hour. What was the % of his wage increase? $6.24-$6.00 = $ 0.24 $0.24 increase $0.24/ $6.00 = = 4% Ryan Seacrest had a 4% wage increase!
