OBJECTIVE: Learn to work with unit rates.

How many of you have ever had to spend your own money for food? If you walk into a store and are starving but have to spend your own money, how do you go about deciding what to buy? Our lesson today on unit rates/unit prices will help us in making smart decisions when choosing food to buy for our shopping.

Unit rates are rates in which the second quantity is 1. unit rate: 30 miles, 1 hour or 30 mi/h The ratio 90 3 can be simplified by dividing: 90 3 = 30 1

Example 1: Finding Unit Rates Geoff can type 30 words in half a minute. How many words can he type in 1 minute? Write a rate. = Geoff can type 60 words in one minute. Multiply to find words per minute. 60 words 1 minute 30 words minute words 2 minute

 On your index card…… 1) Put your name on the top 2) Answer the following question, “How would you use unit rate/unit price in your life?” in a complete sentence or two with at least 2 examples. 3) Rate yourself 1 to 5 on how well you understand unit rate. 1 being you need a lot of extra help, 2 being you need a little extra help, 3 being you are just okay, 4 being you understand it for the most part, 5 being you have mastered and could ace the quiz and could help others!
