Introduction Sussex County Technical School Engineering Technology 11 high school students 4 th time competing in ISR Divided into 4 groups: - Control System/Variable Pitch Propeller - Drive System - Shroud/Strut/Propeller/Fluid - Flow Analysis - Safety System Reusing and modifying hull from our U-3.2 submarine Switched drive system from linear motion to rotational motion

Ellipsoidal: best hydrodynamic design Designed using the Eppler 837 hydrofoil shape. Body made out of alternating layers of matting and foam Removable weight system to balance submarine upon initial in-water testing Sandwich core construction. Allowed for a natural righting movement and offset the dense fiberglass material. Window: Heated Plexiglass, placed in vacuum bagged mold

Efficiency=To p Design Priority 2-blades Increased initial acceleration Ka Speed Propeller Designed to work with the rice speed nozzle (our shroud) Power availability assumptions Given that the vessel will be completely human powered, the obtainable power is completely reliant on the power output of the peddler using only his feet to propel the submarine. By a rough approximation, the adverse conditions of the competition (wearing a 7mm. wetsuit in 20 feet of 64°F water and breathing through a SCUBA regulator) reduced maximum output (approximately.75 hp.) by ½ bringing our output to.375 hp. Due to friction in the gear box and the shaft, the original power of.375 hp will be reduced to.2 hp, assuming 53 % efficiency.

The shroud of U-IV consists of a large ring, whose interior is slightly larger than the propeller blades, a diameter of roughly 13.5 inches. The outer- most diameter of the shroud is 17 inches The cross sectional profile is an airfoil that is of the same style as the profile used on the rice speed nozzle The low pressure side of the foil is the inner side of the shroud Manufacture Constructed from buoyant foam Eight equal parts to fit into CNC machine Covered with a layer of fiberglass for waterproofing and strengthening purposes Struts (Shroud Support) Half of strut is machined then glued into a mold This mold provides a flat surface so the rest of the strut can be machined Secured with an epoxy, and combined into a single structural shell, with the shroud, using fiberglass

Servos will shift, pushing on the shaft, moving the set of pivot blocks Inside watertight box with a shaft running through the box Similar in concept to riding a bike up hill (easier at lower gears) Computer will analyze the propeller’s RPM and will adjust pitch accordingly Servos Will make it easier to pedal at lower speeds Pivot blocks attached to the propeller blades will pitch the propeller Servos will be situated on rear of sub

The propeller will be positioned at the most aggressive pitch at the start by a pre-tensioned spring Max Pitch The pre-tensioned spring will allow the propeller blades to return to the neutral position upon initial rotation (maximum thrust) Tension Spring As the submarine‘s acceleration decreases through the race, the thrust will decrease, thus allowing the pre-tensioned spring to return the propeller blades to its maximum pitch Change Pitch

Pedal Assembly Gear box Purchased Gears Gear Box: Protects the gears and the connection point between the chain system and the gears. Made of wood Pedal Assembly: Modeled after pedal assembly on a regular bicycle Has clipless pedals and hydrodynamic cranks Attaches directly to the hull Has multiple vertical adjustments, as there will be several pilots.

Cables are attached to joystick and are used to control servos System of cables attached to control fins Control fins attached to bow Manual-Back Up System -Joystick used as rudder position indicator

Restraints Modified Snare Drum HarnessAdjustable For Different Size Pilots Emergency Pop Up Buoy Lever held for lock position Knotted string in slot holding buoy down 30 Feet Of 1/16 Inch Pink String Strobe Light PlasticBattery Operated Flashes once every second Visibility – 20 feet Life Support Systems

Umptysquatch-IV was tested for neutral buoyancy All pilots kept in shape with school sports, such as: tennis, soccer, cross country, basketball, and track & field Training Divers and pilots are all PADI SCUBA certified Every student has had 4 years of honors physics I, II, and college level 111 with calculus
