Make sure to include quotation marks around any writing directly quoted from the article.

Part One:  One to two paragraphs indicating the title of the work you are summarizing, the author's name and any other source information that may be needed.  Summarize the piece in your own words. Include the article's thesis statement, as well as major supporting details. This information should be strictly from the article and should NOT include any of your opinions.  Make sure to include quotation marks around any blurbs directly quoted from the article

Part Two:  : Write one to two paragraphs stating why you agree or disagree with the article's thesis and with each main point that the author makes. Consult your questionnaire or a copy of the article to find the important points.  You may agree with some points, but disagree with others.  Use the “They say/I say” templates to provide your transition.

Why Templates?  Academic writing requires presenting your sources and your ideas effectively to readers. According to Graff and Birkenstein, the first element in the process involves “entering a conversation about ideas” between you—the writer—and your sources to reflect your critical thinking (ix).  The templates allow you, the writer, to organize your ideas in relationship to your thesis, supporting evidence, opposing evidence, and the conclusion of the argument.

The Most Important Templates:  On the one hand, __________. On the other hand, __________.  Author X contradicts herself. At the same time that she argues __________, she also implies __________.  I agree that __________. Disagreeing :  I think that X is mistaken because she overlooks __________.  I disagree with X’s view that __________ because, as recent research has shown, __________. Introducing Your Point of View:  X overlooks what I consider an important point about __________.  I wholeheartedly endorse what X calls __________.  My discussion of X is in fact addressing the larger matter of __________.  These conclusions will have significant applications in __________ as well as in __________.

Part Three:  Write a concluding paragraph with final thoughts about the article. Example: What connection can you make to your own life experience? Do you feel others can relate? Why or why not?

Don’t forget…  The final draft will be submitted to turnitin.com the week after Spring Break. 500 words is approximately two pages in 12 pt. font, double spaced. Make sure to include quotation marks around any writing directly quoted from the article.
