Hardware Optimization Memory—Add memory to optimize overall performance. Processor—Scale up or scale out to increase processor performance. Data storage—Add disks to improve performance and provide fault tolerance. Network—Resolve bottlenecks to improve performance.

Security Context of the Services Accounts

Authentication Modes

Collation Settings Determine how non-Unicode character data is stored. Determine how Unicode and non-Unicode characters are sorted and compared. By default, collation settings are based on the Windows locale for the Windows operating system. Change the default in some international configurations. Set at the server level, but can be set differently for specific databases or database objects.

Network Libraries TCP/IP Sockets (primary) and Named Pipes (secondary) by default. Configure additional server network libraries to support other clients. To encrypt network sessions, enable SSL encryption. Server network libraries can be configured during setup or by using the Server Network Utility. Modify or configure client Net-Libraries, and define their order, using the Client Network Utility.

Client Licensing Modes Per Processor No additional licenses required for clients. Cost-effective for installations with large numbers of users, particularly anonymous Internet users. Per Seat Each client must have a Client Access License (CAL). Cost-effective for installations with a small to medium number of users.

Installing SQL Server 2000 Components Database Server Analysis Services English Query

SQL Server Installation Types Client Tools Only—Use to install client management tools and connectivity software (MDAC 2.6) only. Server and Client Tools—Use to install any or all components of SQL Server Connectivity Only—Use to install connectivity software only.

Installing Server and Client Tools Determine the location for program and data files. Choose the setup type. Typical—Choose the service account, authentication mode, and client licensing mode. Minimum—Choose the service account, authentication mode, and client licensing mode. Custom—Choose among all choices.

Components Installed with Each Setup Type Minimum setup includes the database server, replication support, full-text search, and client connectivity. Typical setup adds upgrade tools, management tools, and Books Online to the minimum setup components. Custom setup allows you to select among all components.

Installing Multiple Instances One default instance and multiple named instances. Use for testing or different administrative control. All databases and the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent services are unique between instances. Client tools, Books Online, MS Search service, and MS DTC are common among all instances. SQL Server 2000 client connectivity components must be used to connect to named instances.

Unattended Installations of SQL Server 2000 Start /Wait D:\X86\Setup\Setupsql.exe k=SMS –s –m –SMS –f1 “C:\Setup.iss” Create the Setup.iss file. Use the the Record Unattended.ISS File option in the Advanced Options page in the Setup program. Use one of the Setup.iss files on the SQL Server 2000 CD. Modify the Setup.iss file that is created each time you install SQL Server 2000.

Remote Installations of SQL Server 2000

Troubleshooting Review the Sqlstp.log, Setup.log, and SearchSetup.log output files using any text editor. Use the Microsoft Product Support Services online troubleshooters. Review the SQL Server error log. Use SQL Server Enterprise Manager. Use any text editor. Review the Windows application log.

Chapter Summary Determine the appropriate hardware. Determine the service account, authentication mode, collation settings, network libraries, and client licensing mode. SQL Server 2000 supports one default instance and multiple named instances. Unattended and remote installations are easy. For troubleshooting, review setup output files, the error log, the application log, and PSS online troubleshooters.
