Objectives: SWBAT Identify the statutes covering Stalking, Cyberstalking and Hazing Discuss the impact of Cyberstalking on modern society Evaluate the effectiveness of Anti-Hazing laws 2

The Other Assaultive Crimes Stalking Cyberstalking Hazing 3

Stalking Laws begin to emerge in the late 1980’s Prior police were unable to really do anything until a physical altercation had taken place. In 1996 Congress finally acted making it a federal crime to stalk someone across state lines This has since been rolled into the Violence Against Women Act (2000) 4

Stalking A person commits stalking when: Knowingly and without lawful justification, on at least two separate occasions, follows another person or places them under surveillance At any time transmits a threat of immediate bodily harm to that person or their family Places that person/ family in a reasonable fear of their life/ safety 5

Cyberstalking The internet is a wonderful/ horrible place Due to the rise of social media sites we constantly share more and more info We usually don’t even realize it The anonymity of the internet has made it difficult for law enforcement There is no federal statute as of yet, Though it can fall under previous federal anti- stalking laws Most state laws are identical to the physical stalking laws, but specifically name internet communication 6

How much of a problem is cyberbullying/ stalking at this school? In your life? 7

Hazing Any action that consists of intentional or reckless physical or mental harassment, abuse, or humiliation In Maryland illegal hazing consists of: Creating a situation that subjects a student to risk of serious bodily injury for the purpose of initiation into a group Implied consent to hazing is not an excuse for it 8
