Glory All Around John 17:1-5 The Father Glorifies the Son Knowing the True God The Son Glorifies the Father

The Father Glorifies the Son  Jesus is given the gift of a people.  An appropriate gift of a people to be conformed to His own blessed image  A satisfying gift seen in Jesus’ rejoicing over His people – Isaiah 53:10-11; Hebrews 12:1-3 Glory All Around John 17:1-5

Isaiah 53:10-11 (NASB) 10 But the L ORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the L ORD will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities

Hebrews 12:1-3 (NASB) 1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, s 3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

The Father Glorifies the Son  Jesus is given the gift of a people.  An appropriate gift of a people to be conformed to His own blessed image  A satisfying gift seen in Jesus’ rejoicing over His people – Isaiah 53:10-11; Hebrews 12:1-3  A comforting gift of a people of His own as a result of His suffering – “who you have given me” in verses 2, 6, 9, 11, 12, and 14 Glory All Around John 17:1-5

The Father Glorifies the Son  Jesus is given the gift of power or authority.  The scope of this authority is all people.  This includes angels and demons – Phil. 2:9-11. Glory All Around John 17:1-5

Philippians 2:9-11 (NASB) 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Father Glorifies the Son  Jesus is given the gift of power or authority.  The scope of this authority is all people.  This includes angels and demons – Phil. 2:9-11.  The depth of this authority is over all flesh.  Flesh here includes the entire being – body, soul, and spirit.  Sinful flesh is dominated by a corrupt heart and can’t please God – Romans 8:8; Psalm 51:5; Ephesians 4:22; Jeremiah 17:9 Glory All Around John 17:1-5

Romans 8:8 (NASB) 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. Psalm 51:5 (NASB) 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me

Ephesians 4:22 (NASB) 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, Jeremiah 17:9 (NASB) 9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?

The Father Glorifies the Son  Jesus is given specific ones for salvation as a gift from the Father.  We can’t truly comprehend these things, especially when asked the why of God’s actions.  Luke 4:14-30 Glory All Around John 17:1-5

Luke 4:14-30 (NASB) 14 And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. 15 And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all. 16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. 17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written,

18 “T HE S PIRIT OF THE L ORD IS UPON M E, B ECAUSE H E ANOINTED M E TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. H E HAS SENT M E TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, A ND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, T O SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, 19 T O PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE L ORD.” 20 And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

22 And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” 23 And He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard was done at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” 24 And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.

25 But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land; 26 and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

28 And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things; 29 and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, He went His way.

The Father Glorifies the Son  Jesus is given specific ones for salvation as a gift from the Father.  We can’t truly comprehend these things, especially when asked the why of God’s actions.  Luke 4:14-30  Elijah and the widow in Zarephath  Elisha and Naaman the Syrian Glory All Around John 17:1-5

Knowing the True God  What does it mean that they may know?  It is talking about more than awareness!  It is talking about more than information!  It is talking about more than experience!  It is not merely knowledge of God alone!  It is a personal encounter with God based on His holiness, the awareness of our sin, and our deep need of a Savior.  This only comes by the working of the Holy Spirit Glory All Around John 17:1-5

Knowing the True God  Who is this true God?  What is the effect on us when we come to know Him?  We find the answers in the event of Moses and the burning bush – Exodus 3. Pastor Howie stopped here for his Sept. 20, 2015 message. He will resume here next week. Glory All Around John 17:1-5
