1 Hometown Rejection and Ministry throughout Galilee
Luke 4:16-44

2 “And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up.
Luke 4:16-30 “And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as was His custom, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and He stood up to read. ‎ And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, ‎

3 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ ‎

4 And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. ‎
“And He rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. ‎ And He began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’

5 "To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,
Isaiah 61:2 "To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,”

6 “He has anointed Me to”…:
In this prophecy, the Messiah announced that He came to heal the fivefold damage that sin brings. Sin does great damage, so there must be a great work of redemption.

7 1. To preach the gospel to the poor: Sin impoverishes, and the Messiah brings good news to the poor.
2. To heal the brokenhearted: Sin breaks hearts, and the Messiah has good news for brokenhearted. 3. To proclaim liberty to the captives: Sin makes people captive and enslaves them, and the Messiah comes to set them free.

8 4. Recovery of sight to the blind: Sin blinds us, and the Messiah comes to heal our spiritual and moral blindness. 5. To set at liberty those who are oppressed: Sin oppresses its victims, and the Messiah comes to bring liberty to the oppressed. Guzik

9 “Thankfully, Jesus didn’t come to only preach, deliverance or even to only bring deliverance.
Jesus came to be deliverance for us. “Christ was the great enemy of bonds. He was the lover and the light of liberty.” Morrison

10 “Isaiah wrote of Me.” “Isaiah wrote of now.”
With these words Jesus answered two questions. “Whom did Isaiah write of ?” Jesus answered, “Isaiah wrote of Me.” “When will this come to pass?” Jesus answered, “Isaiah wrote of now.” Guzik

11 “You are fairer than the
Psalm 45:2 “You are fairer than the sons of men; Grace is poured upon Your lips; Therefore God has blessed You forever.”

12 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”
Matthew 7:28-29 “And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”

13 ‘Is not this Joseph’s son?’
“And all spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from His mouth. And they said, ‘Is not this Joseph’s son?’ And He said to them, ‘Doubtless you will quote to Me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself.’

14 ‘Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.’
“What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’ And He said, ‘Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.’

15 to a woman who was a widow. ‎
‘But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. ‎

16 And there were many lepers in Israel in the
time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” ‎

17 “Naaman was healed by sovereign grace, but note how it happened.
First he heard a word that he could be healed. He then responded to that word in faith that connected with action (the act of travelling to Israel).

18 Next, Naaman obeyed the word of the prophet
to wash in the Jordan seven times and he obeyed with humility, surrendering his pride to the word of God through the prophet.”

19 How much more then, when he says to you, 'Wash, and be clean'?“
2Kings 4:13-14 “…My father, if the prophet had told you to do something great, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, 'Wash, and be clean'?“

20 dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of
So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.”

21 But passing through their midst,
When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and drove Him out of the town and brought Him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw Him down the cliff. But passing through their midst, He went away.”

22 “‎And He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee.
Luke 4:31-37 “‎And He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And He was teaching them on the Sabbath, and they were astonished at His teaching, for His word possessed authority. ‎ And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon,

23 evil powers of darkness who are the enemies of God and man.
“the terms unclean spirit, evil spirit, and demon all seem to be the same, referring to evil powers of darkness who are the enemies of God and man. These powers are organized (Ephesians 6:12) and led by Satan himself.” Guzik

24 Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God.’
…and he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!”

25 And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst,
he came out of him, having done him no harm. And they were all amazed and said to one another, ‘What is this word? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!’‎

26 To set at liberty those who are oppressed;”
Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;”

27 “And reports about Him went out into every place
in the surrounding region.”

28 Luke 4:38-39 “And He arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to Him on her behalf. And He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.”

29 “Now when the sun was setting,
Luke 4:40-44 “Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him, and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them.”

30 “And demons also came out of many, crying, ‘You are the Son of God!’
But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ.”

31 “And when it was day, He departed and went into a desolate place.”

32 “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight,
Mark 1:35 “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.”

33 The time in a deserted place was essential for that.”
“The great work that Jesus did in His ministry did not draw on the resource of His divine nature, but on His constant communion with God the Father and His empowering by God the Holy Spirit. The time in a deserted place was essential for that.” David Guzik

34 ‘I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to
And the people sought Him and came to Him, and would have kept Him from leaving them, but He said to them, ‘I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.’ ‎ And He was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.”

35 “…God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power,
Acts 10:38 “…God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”
