Jesus and Our Stuff

Jesus and Our Stuff Is wealth sin? Does God care about my belongings? Is love for money a rich person’s disease? Am I sinning if God hasn’t blessed me more? How should I be spending my time? Am I giving enough away? Is saving a sin? How can I use my non-monetary property to bless others? Am I being faithful with my earthly belongings? Where does the Bible teach these things?

TBC Worship Sun Dec 10, 2006 9:00 am Matthew 6:1-4 (NET Bible) 1 “Be careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven. 2 Thus whenever you do charitable giving, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in synagogues and on streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth, they have their reward. 3 But when you do your giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your gift may be in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.”

TBC Worship Sun Dec 10, 2006 9:00 am Mark 12:38-44 (NET Bible) 38 In his teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out for the experts in the law. They like walking around in long robes and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces, 39 and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ property, and as a show make long prayers. These men will receive a more severe punishment.”

TBC Worship Sun Dec 10, 2006 9:00 am Mark 12:38-44 (NET Bible) 41 Then he sat down opposite the offering box, and watched the crowd putting coins into it. Many rich people were throwing in large amounts. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth less than a penny. 43 He called his disciples and said to them, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the offering box than all the others. 44 For they all gave out of their wealth. But she, out of her poverty, put in what she had to live on, everything she had.”

Our Secret Sacrifices

Our Secret Sacrifices “Jesus indicated that the thing of most importance is not how much is given but the extent to which the gift is a sacrificial one. Or to put it another way, the most significant thing is not how much is given but how much is left for one’s personal use after the gift.” –James Brooks
