Applications of 3D

z Applications that are used and why we use them Product design Modelling TV and film Web games Education Reconstruction Illustration We use 3D within these applications mainly to make everything look realistic and enable movement and interaction for example on web games.

Product design We use 3d in product design to make the process of converting a product need into plans for a manufacture-ready product and easier and more accurate job. For a product to be successful, the design of that product usually should include industrial design, design engineering. The more accurate and specific the model is on the paper, a more accurate and specific model can be made into real life, and is more likely to function better then what it would as a 2d design.

z Modelling We use modelling in aspects of areas such as earth science, communities have started to construct 3d geological models for standard practice. The medical industry uses models as detailed organs. The engineering community uses them as designs of new devices, vehicles and structures as well as a host of other uses. Without the use of 3d in some of these areas, the end product of certain companies would probably be very difficult to make and very un specific. The medical industry uses them for education and to teach people how organs work and without the models it would be very hard to explain and possibly wouldn’t cover all areas.

z TV and Film The tv and film industry use 3d modelling to create characters and objects for animated and real life motion pictures, a sequence of 3-D artwork or model positions, create an illusion of movement. It is an optical illusion of motion due to the phenomenon of persistence of vision, and can be created and demonstrated in a number of ways. The most common method of presenting animation is as a motion picture or video program, although several other forms of presenting animation also exist. 3D Animated films are very realistic, and a lot of visual effects are created. Without 3d technology there would be no animated films and it would cost a lot more to make films using real life actors. 3D is used in some films where the audience has to wear special glasses. With the use of these glasses the film looks 3d and as if the characters are coming out at you, it is an excellent effect but expensive to make.

z Web games Developments in computer graphics (CG) have had a profound impact on many types of media and have revolutionized the animation and video game industry. Web-based 3D games are having an increasing social and economic impact and since this field is covering large areas of computer science research it has gained growing interest from the scientific community, as well Examples of web games are, The Sims, Fifa, Call of Duty, GTA. Web games are used by millions of people all around the world, some are made with better graphics then others but can be more expensive to make. 3d is interpreted to making different characters and objects with specific movements etc.

z Education 3D modeling software allows users to create or view 3D objects or environments. In education, the software is typically used for students to view and manipulate scientific models or environments for building and manipulating models or prototypes. For example when discovering about an organ such as liver, the model can show exactly what it is like from all points of view, how it works, the size, what is inside it. It can give a much clearer explanation than looking at a 2d picture in a book.

z Reconstruction 3D Imaging of plan parallel slices is the source of many 3D visualizations. It helps to convey ideas and it allows to do measurements for specific reasons, such as police investigations. They can use 3d to get a clearer idea of an investigation and it will stimulate more ideas.

z Illustration 3D illustration can be used in place of real life images. A good example is a court case, because it is illegal to take cameras into the room, so drawings are made for evidence of the suspect/victim to show exactly how they were portrayed.

z CGI Development The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is a standard for interfacing external applications with information servers, such as HTTP or Web servers. A plain HTML document that the Web daemon retrieves is static, which means it exists in a constant state: a text file that doesn't change. A CGI program, on the other hand, is executed in real-time, so that it can output dynamic information. For example, let's say that you wanted to "hook up" your Unix database to the World Wide Web, to allow people from all over the world to query it. Basically, you need to create a CGI program that the Web daemon will execute to transmit information to the database engine, and receive the results back again and display them to the client. This is an example of a gateway, and this is where CGI, currently version 1.1, got its origins. The database example is a simple idea, but most of the time rather difficult to implement. There really is no limit as to what you can hook up to the Web. The only thing you need to remember is that whatever your CGI program does, it should not take too long to process. Otherwise, the user will just be staring at their browser waiting for something to happen.
